Fwb 300s

Don,

I don't suppose your smith is in Vancouver, eh?:D

Your 300 is 25 years younger than mine and no problems, wow.

My only concern is that I foolishly oiled (air gun oil) my 300S through the transfer port, as recommended by the fellow I bought the gun from. Leonardj said that was a no-no:mad:

I really hate dismantling guns needlessly. But I want to be sure I do not damage this beauty through neglect.

Thanks for your reply

LeonardJ,

A serial number search revealed my 300S was manufactured in 1985-86. I bought it used in 1988. Almost new. Maybe it is safe to assume the blue seal is original. Should I replace it?

I will not shoot her again until I replace the buffer and clean/replace the lube, promise.

Is this the link you were referring to, for disassembly instructions?

I may be able to to do the work. What brand/type of moly grease do you recommend? Are there any other parts I should order?

Thank you
The blue seal should probably be replaced - it is, after all, 25 years old, and probably about due.

The parts that must be replaced are the buffer and breech seal.
The metallic piston ring is usually OK, and only needs to be replaced if broken. The same goes for the dual, counterwound mainsprings. I usually check them out, and if they are not canted or fatigued, they can be re-used, no problem.

All the above parts can be obtained from Cibles Canada:

That stripdown on Pilkguns is a good one. I couldn't find the other one that I was thinking of.

Any 50-60% moly grease is good. You can get some good quality stuff from your local Honda dealer, or if that doesn't work out, you can order it from here:

Here is a sample of what I am talking about. These are the parts from an Anschutz LG250 match rifle, of about the same vintage, or perhaps a year or two older than your FWB 300. This is it's first teardown since brand new. The Anschutz uses a hydraulic recoil dampening mechanism, very different from the FWB sledge system. With this gun, the teardown was prompted by the failure of the hydraulic damper seals, which left the gun covered in hydraulic oil.

You can see the ridge around the transfer port end of the breech seal, indicating that the seal is compressed from age/use.

The piston buffer is on the verge of disintegration. Wouldn't take too many more shots before it would begin to break up.

The breech seal and buffer for this particular gun are pretty much unobtainium, so I manufactured both the replacement items from 90 DU urethane.

The end cap buffer, and damper seals as shown in the four bottom pics, are not present in the FWB, but it will give you an idea of what 25 - 30 year old synthetic materials can potentially look like.

Leonardj

The LGR has not found its way home yet.

I was sure that you had gone over the 300S as well.
I will have to talk with the guys from the club to find out who did do the work.

I will let you know when the LGR get here.

Don

Thanks.
I post as "Suprmatic" over on the CAF.
This is a pic that I posted for someone over on the CAF that had inquired about info on an Anschutz 250.

Yup, I recognized you by your name here. I'm "lh" on CAF, bought that beautiful black LP53 off you last week. My wife has a few words for you... I won't tell her where to find you (teeheehee).

You are quite welcome.
If you run into any difficulties while working on that FWB 300, just rattle my chain here on CGN, and I will be happy to asist you

Something wrong with my 300S

Rather than start a new thread, I'll try resurrecting this one.

Haven't done any maintenance to the 300S since Leonardj's last post, but figured a couple of shots won't hurt. So this afternoon, I brought it along to the range.

Sure enough after two shots, the third shot was like......pffft. Pellet stayed in the breech. I cocked it again, same result.

You can say "I told you so...shoulda serviced the rifle before shooting" I don't mind.:(

Please tell me what is wrong with this baby.

I hope LeonardJ chimes in.

I answered your post in detail over on the CAF forum - I post as "Suprmatic" there.
