FX9 Questions

Why is the PCC so destructive on triggers? Is it due to the blowback design? Is it more violent?

That’s exactly it, due to the blowback. If you look at the Timney PCC trigger it now has a block so the hammer can’t over extend.

You should have no problems with the Geissele 3 Gun trigger.

Awesome, that pretty much seals the deal I'd say.

I've had mine since the OIC and used it in many DSSMatch.com 3 gun events...

1) mine has been great since the start. It DOES need to get cleaned every 500 rounds or so or it'll gunk up...
2) I have a Triggertech PCC in mine and it has been great
3) I shoot all kinds of 124 out of mine because that is what my PPQ likes too... Mine does NOT LIKE hollow points at all.
4) I put a H3 buffer in and found that smoothed it out a bit... Delrin spacer in the recoil tube too.
5) I run a Vortex SPARC AR on mine... 9mm is a sub-150m carbine, so LPVO seems overkill...
6) I have one of the upgraded Raptor style CH as that is what I had on my AR; I love it.

Sounds good.

I love Triggertech triggers but I think I read that the FX9 PCC Triggertech is two stage which is an odd choice for this application I'd say, hence why I wanted to go with something more geared up for faster double taps like the Geissele 3 Gun.

I suspected hollow points might be an issue but I have other types of bullets I can try.

Definitely going to play with the buffer system.

Where did you get the upgraded Raptor style charging handle? Thats an upgrade I want to do for sure, the standard changing handle looks like a kids toy.

1) I have both, the Ruger and FX9 and both are reliable but I prefer my FX9 due to the balance. No issues unless you insert the mag forcefully on a open bolt on the FX9 and it will go past the mag release and it’s a pain to get the mag out.
2) Do not use a captured AR trigger as you will destroy it in a PCC, I run Timney PCC triggers in mine.
3) I prefer 147 gr bullets with 3.2 grains of titegroup (if you reload) the are extremely soft shooting. The lighter the bullet the snappier the feel
4) Absolutely but I prefer hydraulic buffers
5) Red dot
6) I’ve also upgraded to a Blitzkrieg hydraulic buffer and AR 10 spring. The bolt will not lock open by using an AR 10 spring but you can always use a chamber flag. To be honest the bolt lock open really isn’t that reliable even with out modifications

Been looking at this some more and may well pick up one of these, what happens if you dont use an AR10 spring?

I would like the bolt to lock back (easier in competition if the gun runs dry to drop the mag, stick in a new one and hit the bolt release to drop the bolt as opposed to having to cycle the bolt with the charging handle).

You may feel more recoil if you don’t use the AR 10 spring though there is not a ton being a 9mm.

I disagree with your analogy of letting your gun run dry while competing though, I find it easier to count rounds and no manipulation is required whatsoever when you have one in the chamber other than inserting a fresh mag.

If you mean counting shots while running a course thats not a skill I possess (too much going on to do that for me).

If instead you mean you plan your mag changes to ensure that the gun never runs dry which is best practice and what I try to do (unless there is a reason to run the gun to empty), however sometimes that plan doesn't work out and my accuracy lets me down which is where I would rather being dropping the bolt than running the charging handle to get back in the game ASAP.

Just a couple of comments...

1. I have found my FX9 extremely reliable. It gets dirty really fast being blowback, but takedown/field strip to clean is an absolute breeze. I clean it every 200 rounds unless I use Syntech ammo, as everything gets fouled up to the point of granular carbon particles that are gritty like sand and adversely affect function.
2. I have a red dot on mine, a Holosun HS515GM. I also have it mated with a Holosun H3MX magnifier
3. For bullet weight, I pretty much ONLY run 147 grain through mine. I have also used 115gr and 124gr but prefer the 147gr for performance (at least for me)
4. Today, at my club, I actually shot 100 rounds of my hollow point HST defensive ammo through it. It ran without issues and accuracy was good at 25 yards
5. Mine came bone dry. Had to G96 the whole thing before using, probably overdoing it
6. I have only used brass cased ammo on it since the manual said to avoid aluminum
7. Additions I have on it are a Streamlight HLX weapon light as well as a Magpul angled foregrip
8. I would suggest a better third party charging handle that is bigger. Mine is a Gen2 FX9 and the "enhanced" charging handle is still way too small.

I have never played with trigger options or buffer weights, so can't comment on any of those

My only two beefs with my FX9 are as follows:

1. Last round bolt hold open does not work reliably/consistently with OEM Glock 17 G5 mags (native 10 rounders)
2. The bolt catch/bolt release goes off by itself for no rhyme or reason. Currently trial and erroring various possible solutions for this

Interesting that you ran hollow points with no issues. I have a good stash of 124gr HPs but I also have a decent stash of 147gr non hollow points which I suspect will be the best fit.

Cleaning seems to be a common theme, not surprising for a blowback and I find pistol type actions get dirty anyways (I'm pretty fussy about cleaning my gear).

For red dot I think most have stated that they used the tube style you mention - has anyone tried the open reflex style on a rig like this? The open nature of it would make it very easy to acquire the target but maybe its too low to be usable (even with the picatinney riser)?

I guess what I am trying to say is has anyone tried something like this:

As opposed to this:
Red Dot.jpg

Charging handle is on my list for sure. The factory one looks like something from a Christmas cracker.

The last round bolt hold open seems to be finicky based on what I have read.

So it sounds like the FX9 has two generations with the G2 being the better bet.

Does anyone know when the G1 stopped being produced? My LGS has stock and they most likely are G2s but I want to be sure - what are the differences between a G1 & G2 so I know what to look for?

Gen 2 is better, yes. Not sure when Gen 1 stopped. Within a year or two of them making it to Canada, maybe? Anyway a Gen 2 model has a feed ramp bevel all the way around the chamber, comes with the upgraded charging handle (so far as I know) and has an improved bolt for reliability. There may be other differences that I don't recall. You can always contact Freedom Ordnance - they'll likely be pretty good at getting back to you as they've answered all my questions over the years fairly quickly (within a couple days at most). I think a CGN user had posted some comparison pictures in another FX-9 thread somewhere here in the PCC forum. If I find it I'll ink it.

Anyone?

I’m looking for specifics, as I’m not a well versed AR guy.

I run an H3 in mine but other folks do it differently. There's no 'right' answer for most of this, it's your personal preference gleaned from some trial and error. I've heard even heavier buffers are maybe even better. I've never tried nor heard of a "Blitzkreig Buffer" until I just Googled around (link below), but maybe this is something worth looking into. I've tried the 308 spring and it was a bit TOO strong for mine, wouldn't cycle correctly so I took it out and went back to the stock spring + about $1.50 in quarters. Works perfectly. Your mileage may vary, so do some Google-Fu and order up a couple options online or from your local gun shop.

After some digging I am starting to lean towards the Trigger Tech PCC trigger.

I have several Trigger Techs and love them, from what I have read on the PCC trigger it is fast with a clean break & short reset and can be turned down to 3.5lbs.

It is quite a bit less cash than the SD3G Geissele (not to to mention that Trigger Tech usually have a smoking Black Friday sale every year which is just around the corner) and it is purpose built for PCC.

Thanks, Neutrino.

I'll just piggyback on this reply.
1. Mine also was not locking open with 10 round G19 mags but worked reliably with pinned G17 mags. Mysteriously it starting locking on both and is now (at least currently) 100% reliable. I totally can't explain that one - maybe there's a little piece of brass stuck somewhere in the works that is causing magic. I dunno...
2. If I lay the gun on bolt catch side it releases. They really need to work that out because it's super anoying.
3. I shot a match with an FX9 and you have to pound the mags into the gun super hard on a closed bolt with full mags. Not so bad if there's only 9 in the mag. The palm of my hand was actually getting sore by the end of the match. Had lots of poor times at the start of match until I figured that one out.

A great point...and for me, it's not just with full mags. I had a 33/10 mag and even with 8 or 9 loaded on a closed bolt, I really need to give it a hard whack to seat. With the full 10 rounds (hitting the pin limit), it won't seat at all on a closed bolt. But then again with the AR style PMAGS in my 5.56 rifles, loading a pinned mag that is full (5/30 for PMAG, 10 for LAR15), seating on a closed bolt is problematic. With the FX9 it seems to behave the same. With my Ruger PC Carbine, not much of an issue.

Deffo thinking of going this direction - for the NR FX9 did you get the regular Blitzkrieg Hydraulic Buffer or the HD Blitzkrieg Hydraulic Buffer?

From what I can tell the HD Blitzkrieg Hydraulic buffer is the better bet for the longer barrel?

Thanks for this. I have been putting off trying to play with the buffer until now. Put in $1.50 in quarters with the stock spring and buffer and shall see how it runs on the weekend. If there is no change, I can always take out the $1.50 and make a Timmy's run for coffee (does $1.50 even buy you a medium coffee anymore??)

I saw the Blitzkrieg one video comparison and it seemed like for the guy it was a more noticeable difference in the recoil effect...but if it helps keep the red dot on target, that will be a compelling reason.

I always have put off the quarters thing due to not seeing any wear on the bolt catch - but then I haven't checked the travel distance of the bolt when fully retracted back.
