FYI Ithaca Uveils Defence Model 37

Doesn't make too much sense, they put a FIXED (lame) barrel on a Ithaca 37 and say it stops malfunctions from a loose barrel? At least the $499 price tag is a bit more down to earth. I was expecting to see something more like the old M & P version.

These guys really need to get their act together. Why would I want a no frills Deerslayer instead of a DSPS?

They also need to update their web page since you can apparently get the old style 20" with 8 rd mag tube. Saw a pic over on shotgunworld, looked pretty decent, had Remington style rifle sights on it too.

At least the price isn't too bad.

Last I heard, a big no to that question. Unless there is a recent change?

Most of us Canadian Ithaca enthusiasts, are living off shotguns that have changed hands many times, and the pile of spare parts from Ron Sharp in Dunnville Ontario (CGN Equipment Excahnge too)

Thank God & Capitalism for quality manufacturing!

I'd like to actually see one before passing judgment. There are a couple of things I do like and a couple of things I don't like right out of the gate. On the negative side, the bead is right down on the barrel with no pedestal under it to match the height of the receiver, so the gun will shoot high. This seems to be a common failing among economy shotguns. The wood finish looks like gloss varnish, yuck! The lack of barrel band or attachment point from the barrel to the magazine makes it look like something is missing. If the trigger is around 4 pounds and crisp, thats workable, but 6 pounds is not.

On the plus side, this is an inexpensive gun that should be enthusiastically accepted by south paws who until now have had to use right handed budget minded guns like Mossy's, Winny's, Remmy's, Grizzlies, and Norcy's. The threaded magazine cap I would consider an improvement over the original.

The gun could be made quite serviceable with the addition of a ghost ring rear sight and post front sight or even by simply having a pedestal installed under a high vis bead. I would opt for a sling and swivels as well. For thoise who appreciate the mounting of a side saddle, there appears to be no easy way to do this short of drill and tapping the receiver.

My south paw brother who lives in central BC isn't a gun guy, but recently he has been talking about getting a bear gun for trips into the back country. His son who is right handed now has a .22 and a .30/06 so they are used to the idea of having guns in the house, and this Ithica just might provide one possible answer that could be used with equal ease by left handed or right handed family members.

I emailed Ithaca a couple years back to see if they have any dealers in Canada and got quite a blunt response saying Ithaca does no business in Canada and does not ship any product there.

Guys, what would one expect to pay for a nib, old stock, police special?

Thanks.

Truthfully, you don't see many of them around. I got mine quite by accident. I had a guy that owed me some money but he didn't have any money but he had a DSPS.....figured it was better than nothing. I already owned a Model 37and the DSPS fits nicely in the role of a bear scare gun!

Thanks for the replies. This one is in mint shape and unfired, but the asking price is on the high side at over $800

$800!!! That does seem high. Doubt you'd get anywhere near that in the US for it, which is the biggest market for these. I'd personally go as high as $500 but I might be out to lunch.
