FYI Side Charging Handle afficionados - Devil Dog Concepts (DDC) Hard Charger

Attach it to the gas key, and the handle will cycle with the BCG every time you fire the gun. It has to be left unattached

Well, they already have someting like that.

I think it's made by Fulton armory. It's a special bolt that has a handle with a matching receiver.

You must like your dentist.

My dentist? Why the hell is my race sitting on the side of the action? I know there's all kinds of tarted up ways to hold an AR15, but none of them involve having a cheekweld on the receiver. Discard the stupid existing charging handle, mill a slot on the left side under the rail and attach a charging handle directly to the gas key. Done.

Obviously a promotional video, but you get the idea.

Piston & 100% free floated barrel.

What are you aiming at effectively when you have a situation where the gun needs to be charged? Do you keep your pistol out on target at full arm extension when shooting to rack the slide? To stay on target?

I dunno but thats something I always loved about my tavor and acr as opposed to my AR. Something happens, I drop the mag, rack the handle, pop a new mag in, rack the handle and im good to go, always eyes on target. I like that, but then Im not shootimg baddies in afghanistan or kurdistan so really I dont know anything.

Eyes on target is important. But that has nothing to do with the orientation of the weapon. You will not be sights on target while manipulating the gun. All of those things can be managed with the AR in its current configuration. It really comes down to practice and comfort in shouldering the gun while manipulating it.

Dlask had an upper that used a C1A1 type cocking handle years ago, so it's not a new idea. I got a chance to fire one owned by a member here when I lived in Petawawa. Don't know if you can still get them though.

if it cycles with the bolt you can eliminate the forward assist

Dint ding ding! If you design it similar to the SCAR handle, it would barely add any weight, and yes, you could very readily eliminate the forward assist, it's protrusion and the lame back/top charging handle. Hence why I like the idea of attaching it to the gas key. The handles tang can be round like the SCAR, or flat like Remington and Mossberg Shotgun charging handles.

Hard to argue against a side charger, its just more intuitive. For guys who want it without having to mill and mod an upper I can see this being a good purchase. Otherwise the adcor style upper would be the way to go, just not with that slim folding handle. Put a knob on it.
