G17 vs g22

.40 is a harder round to learn how to shoot with, and the defensive difference that nobody's allowed to use anyways, is marginal.
My first few guns were .40 because I thought it was cool, but every gun since then has been a 9 or 45

I'd go with a G17 if you feel like you need Glock, or the FN 509 seems to be winning everyone over, but don't forget a trigger upgrade!

And listen to Still Alive, he's the man.

This! And good advice from Still Alive. 9 is more pleasant and cheaper to shoot. .40 is fun but will beat up the gun and the shooter a little more. However, unless you plan to shoot a ton of .40, the G22 will likely outlast you!

What is the main difference other than ammo obviously is a 22 with a 9mm conversion a better option If I'm not sure weather I want 9mm or .40 what is the main difference between the 2 rounds ?

Go with the Glock G17 Gen 5 MOS, gives you all kinds of options down the road, and much nicer shooting than a G22 IMO.

Get the G17. If you want something for fun factor, get a G21 along with a 10mm conversion barrel. There’s is no need for 40sw when there’s 10mm!

Kinda beg to differ.... I had a .40 S&W barrel fitted to my Colt Delta 10mm. Way easier to source .40 S&W brass for reloads than 10mm. Especially, since our local ranges are littered with fresh, once fired .40 S&W brass twice a year after the local cops do their qualifications. ;)

Yup! 40 cal brass is still available if you know where to look. Also you can buy them online. Like hen's teeth at my range though.

It's possible to get near 10mm ballistics with a 40cal. Load 180 grain head over 7.5 grain Longshot. 1150 fps. That's a PF of 207! Not bad for a pipsqueak .40!

In the Canadian setting, owning a 40 cal version of the same pistol in 9mm is a great advantage. My FNS9 can use the mag from my FNS40 for a totally legal 12 rounds.

I don’t disagree with you guys, but same can be said for 9mm. It would even save the op money in that he doesn’t even have to buy conversion barrels, mags and what not. Or even just buy 9mm +p ammo or ++p and be done with.

The .40 S&W is hardly a waste of time, despite what some may think or say.

Agree to disagree, but that’s what makes life interesting.

.40cal loses the ubiquity and is at a capacity disadvantage compared to 9mm. Ballistically it may have a slight edge in performance depending on load, but not enough to make any difference in effect on either paper or people. If you go handgun hunting or wilderness carry then 10mm outclasses .40 in every respect.

OP, what do you hope to gain by getting a .40?
