If enough people shoot them, the problem gets solved. Doesn't work in France, Texas and Louisiana because they hunt them like game animals, and not simply varmints, which is what they are. And night hunting is fun. Particularly with full autos. - dan
 
They can breed all year and feed on crops and naturally occurring plants all year in Texas too. Not to mention the first ones showed up with De Soto so they have a bit of a head start

Hopefully our environment makes them less fecund. Bears, cougars, coyotes and wolves can lend a hand. It’s the agricultural regions of the prairies that strike me as a recipe for disaster. Imagine southern Alberta white tail numbers of hogs

There is a researcher in Sask at the University that has been studying them for years and has lots of information on the spread of boars in Canada. I saw an on-line presentation he did and it was very interesting. If I recall correctly he thinks that it may already be too late to stop the spread of them in Canada as they have become firmly established in a number of provinces and there isn't much being done to stop it. According to him the best way to eliminate them is by capturing an entire sounder with drop cages. Hunting pigs to try to eliminate them doesn't generally have a good success rate and then the animals go nocturnal and breakup into groups and spread.

Hunting wild boar likely some fun, but generally has sucked as a population control measure - everywhere, even for feral pigs, not just for the Eurasian wild boar - Europe, Texas, Louisiana, and so on.

That's him Potash! Your right about east central Saskatchewan that is apparently ground zero for wild boars in Canada.

Ryan seemed like a good guy when I saw his presentation. He's an academic so is interested in the data and has compiled quite a few maps based on boar sightings that are reported. As I recall he isn't anti-hunting at all but as far as trying to control the spread of boars, which is important, hunting just isn't very effective at the end of the day. If you want to get pigs out of an area you need to trap complete sounders to effectively remove them or so the experts say.

as a kid it was one litter a year now it is 2 or 3 litters due to less hunting and less control ... good luck when they start to have numbers it is hard to get rid of them ...
 
Buddy in Texas is telling me that the pig population is down at least 30% and maybe 50% over the last 5 years with 5 years of drought , hunters and although against the law many farmers have been poisoning them . He says the biggest impact is drought . 5 years ago he could shoot 10 in one night around his area and now he sees 10 in a week . He says when the drought is over they'll spring back .

We can shoot them if they are actively damaging property though, unless they get flagged as endangered.

Legislation amendments to the FWCA will be enacted as of Jan 1 2022 barring hunting of wild hogs of any breed or hybrid. Until then,they can still be taken with a small game license. Farmers,their agents and property managers are still able to shoot them to control damage to property and livestock.
 
Watched an interesting YouTube video on trapping hog..

The gentleman was putting up some really good numbers. Far more effective than shooting.
Sold the hogs over 250 lbs to meat market..
Keeps the smaller ones, as they don't feed into the assembley line due to the smaller size..
Shooting hogs in the night game , without noise.. not possible to be effective in this country, with this dictator's drama class in progress.
Want to try shooting some from a CHOPPA!! fun$$$
I'll be hiking with maggie as the minimum!!
