Well, it's getting close - I think it's ready to go off to the gunsmith for the last bits. Plan initially was to make a Galil clone, but it't turning out to be more of a Galil/AK mashup!

Started out as a .308 Valmet Hunter. Professionally converted to 7.62x39. Trigger moved and swapped out for an AK trigger pack. Front sight swapped for Galil unit. Receiver cover swapped out for the appropriate Galil parts (some filing required!) Extended mag release and AK muzzle device on the way.

Still needs:

- shorten, re-crown, and thread the barrel
- rivet on the trigger guard
- build and install front and rear handguard retainers
- build and install a block for the rear of the receiver, to fill in the gap
- stock bolt needs to be figured out - it's not actually mounted yet
- pistol grip bolt needs to be figured out - it's also not mounted yet, just sitting in place for the photo
- and may someday replace the Valmet bolt carrier with a Galil one, though I'm not actively looking for one. I'm ok with an AK-style charging handle!!

Already function tested the revised trigger assembly, and it seems to work fine :)

Did you change the barrel during the conversion to 7.62x39 or did you just set the barrel back and rechamber?

It had been converted to 7.62x39 before I bought it. I ran a couple of hundred rounds through it in its 'Hunter' configuration when I got it to make sure it functioned properly, before I started the Galil conversion, but I'm no gunsmith, so that's a good question. Looks to me like the barrel was replaced.

Im just wondering if it will have a .308 or .311 bore.

Too bad you can't get the appropriate barrel length.
And do try and get the Galil cocking handle. It's what differentiates the Galil from a clone!

If I find one for a reasonable price, I'll definitely take your advice! I actually have a spare chrome AK bolt carrier that I'd happily trade for a Galil one, if anyone with a prohib wants to swap.

For a 308 to 7.62x39 conversion the barrel would have to be replaced - the chamber is too long and big to begin with and the barrel needs to be inserted further into the receiver. You can't just cut the chamber end...

So, if the gunsmith knew what the were doing, the barrel should be .311. Slug it?

Thanks for the push btw. I need to wrap up my conversion from 223 to 7.62x39 :) Need to finish fitting the trigger guard...

It might be easier to find a bolt carrier in South Africa, I believe the R4 used the same carrier as the Galil (most R4 parts ae the same as Galil parts). Amazing project, somewhere a Liberal is crying.
