Just a question for you guys. Can an 11 years old shoot birds on a game farm in Ontario? I ask this in a hunting forum but I don't consider this hunting thats the reason I ask.

Thanks

You require a small game licence to hunt on a game farm (birds) and there is no allowance in the regs for a hunter "younger than 12". So at 11 they can't even have apprentice status.

From the Regs:

Game Bird Hunting Preserves
You may hunt pheasant, northern bobwhite, wild turkey and chukar throughout the year on game bird hunting preserves. However, northern bobwhite and wild turkey are prohibited in some areas. You must arrange with the owner as to when you can hunt.
Ontario residents need a licence to hunt small game when hunting on a preserve. A non-resident hunter needs either a non-resident’s licence to hunt game birds on a game bird hunting preserve or a non-resident’s small game licence.

Class A1 Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card
The A1 Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card permits the cardholder to hunt with all methods permitted under the Act and regulations. Applicants for this version of the Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card must be 12 years of age or older and will have to provide documentation that they have passed both the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam and the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam. These courses are available in a “One-Stop” combined course; however, both courses are available independently if desired. “One-Stop” graduates will meet provincial training requirements to hunt with a gun or bow hunting equipment and the federal training requirements for firearms possession, acquisition and ownership. (NOTE: To own or acquire a gun, you must be 18 years of age or older.)

^^^ The regs still say you need a small game licence, even if the birds are bought by (you) and released on "private land" (outside of a game farm). Additionally, the "bag limits" still apply on a game farm (business) or private location with released birds.

An 11 year old can't get a licence.

An 11 year old can't get a hunter apprentice card.

I would call the MNRF to confirm, but there is no allowance in the regs for someone under 12 to "hunt" under any circumstance "legally" whether it's on public, private or (business) land "in Ontario".

This is 100% correct. I worked on a game farm in northern Ontario many years ago and ALL hunters/clients had to be licensed to hunt. My buddy who owned the operation would not let unlicensed clients & or unlicensed clients kids shoot at birds. He would allow them only to come along for the experience as the combination of legal requirements & liability issues should an accident occurr due to an unlicensed hunter were far too great to risk all.

The only place I have ever had my hunting licence checked by a CO in Ontario was on one my very few trips to a game farm while shooting released birds. It was surprising given the amount time I have spent hunting.
