Garand Calibres

The US Navy put a small piece in the chamber of their original 30-06 guns to change the internal dimensions to 308.
Sometimes the pice comes out under fire, but it seemed to work most of the time

7.62 Garands

The Italians converted a number to 7.62.This was done by cutting off the breech end of a standard .30-06 barrel,re-threading and reaming with a 7.62 reamer. This conversion shortened the barrel approx 1/2" and required the use of a shortened stock,op rod,op rod spring, and rear handguard,as well as the installation of a spacer block beneath the bullet guide. This conversion works well. You can also procure a commercial .308 Win barrel and have it installed with no other changes except to install a spacer block to facilitate semi-auto feeding.

Well, there WERE those ones built in .276 Pedersen, but my entire pension for several years likely won't buy one. Sure would like to shoot one, though.....

The spacer was not to help guide the bullets in, it was so you could not insert a .30-06 clip into the action! (Just a note to clarify)

You use the standard Garand en bloc clip. The spacer basically fills in the magazine well so that the shorter 7.62 or .308 round will feed properly instead of coming off track and binding as it is stripped from the clip and moves towards the chamber. And yes,the spacer would prevent the insertion of a clip of .30-06 ammo by mistake.
