Hello !

I will begin soon to cast my 530 gr bullets for my antique Remington rolling block 45-70. I have never made my own bullets before.

My intention is to reload my rifle with smokless powder at B.P. pressure and duplicate approximativly the balistic of the vintage ammos from the Buffalo area, at a muzle speed of +/- 1100 ft/s.

I will try to use 25 to 1 lead/tin alloy. My lub will be Lee.

Do I need a gas check at that speed and pressure ?

Thank you

You wont need a gas check but use an overpowder card/wad, a drop tube and a compression plug to compress the BP. BTW if u are planning on using Lee liquid Alox lube, a lot of BP shooters prefer more traditional lubes. Lots of info on the web on that subject.
Cheers

Most .45 heavy bullets won't be cut for a gas check, so you can't put one on anyways, I would not use the Lee lube for Black Powder bullets, it will only add to the fouling. I would suggest you get/read alot of info. on BP reloading because it is quite different from smokeless, read up on drop tubing, compressing powder, cleaning your gun and used cases, etc. Let me know if you need any info on this.....Ben

Hey guys, he said he is using smokeless powder, not black powder.
No, you do not need a gas check, or a over powder card. If you are using a small amount of quite fast powder, you may, or may not, want to use a dacron, or similar type filler, to hold the small amount of powder close to the primer.
If you want to use a filler, PM me and I will tell you about a low priced good one.

You shouldn't need a gas check at all at those speeds. If you get any leading, you're better off playing with the lube formulation.

My bad..I saw BP but conveniently missed the "loading with smokeless to BP pressure" line..DOH!
Thanks for clearing that up

I misunderstood as well, I don't understand why someone would want to load an old gun like that with heavy bullets and then fill case 1/4 full of smokeless powder resulting in a lot of "off" sounding shots and poor accuracy. So I just assumed he was using BP, the proper propellant for his purposes.

You will not need to gas check till you start pushing them past 1700 fps. Look at this site and pick a powder. http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm
I use IMR 700X, 12 grains for my cast 405 grain bullets(1122fps) and 13.5 grains for my 500 grain cast bullets(1210fps). I've tried Unique, W231 and found IMR 700X the most consistent, out to 500 yards. I need to buy a tang site to reach out further.
I cast 2 kinds of 405 grain bullets and 2 kinds of 500 grain bullets. The 45/70 is one of the guns on the fun gun list, I truly enjoy shooting mine.
Bang, remove spent case, have a sip of coffee, then pull out ear plug and listen for bong!! Have fun.
My targets 4'tall X 8'long 3 in my yard right now.

I use smokeless powder as well. I found topping off the charge with some dacron helped maintain the powder in place and made for more consistant velocities.

As for casting large bullets, when I do it, I use a bottom pour furnace and keep the pouring handle open longer. Otherwise, I find as the lead cools and shrinks, I end up with a hollow or a small air pocket in the base.

as far as gas checks, you wont need them for that velocity
if you need some lube give me a shout.
stick solid, hollow stick and i can probably get you liquid alox at 1/2 the price you find in stores.
pm me for details
cheers
