General Prohibition on .223 ammo soon?

My gun guru who I just talked to this afternoon, said he has some good sources that say NO .223 ammo will be available to the general public for at least the next 2 years (other than whats already on the shelfs at the stores now, or in transit to the stores).
I asked him why? He said that the war in Iraq is causing shortages of components such as brass/primers etc and the makers cant keep up with demand, so there will be no civilian sales to keep up with wartime demands (or unless the war ends)
He has said his suppliers have already told him there wont be any available AND, they told him "if you are an owner of a .223 weapon, you better stock up now." )
I dont personally own a .223, but this news seems rather crappy to me.
They should have never stopped using .308 or even .30-06, no need for 30 little .223 rounds when one .30 cal round will stop him (through a wall!!)
I totally trust his word, he is not a bullsh*tter, he is a standup guy, a weapons expert, an experienced salesman and gun owner.
Just thought I would pass it on, and see what you all think of this tidbit. :eek:

I've heard this rumor ever since the wars started. Don't believe it.

He wasnt trying to sell me anything, and he knows I dont have a .223 or want one. I just added that to show that he talks to suppliers that the regular joe doesn't have access to. He is in charge of ordering guns and ammo for the store, and this is what was just passed on to him from his supplier. They aren't sending him ANY .223 and will not in the near future. He had just talked to them about 1 hour before I walked into the store.

More that 1 type of ammo use the .223 primer
Brass is brass

The only things that happen is that surplus ammo is more scarce in the US. Enve now, the situation isn't as bad as it was 3 years ago. Doesn't affect us as much since IVI won't sell to civies

Then his suppliers may be fibbing to him.

These are very very old rumors. I've been hearing this same thing from reputable dealers for over 5 years. I stopped believing them years ago.

Trust me on this one.
 
Cool, I will pass it on to him, maybe due to the distance to ship here, or just a low supply on the other end, they Bullsh*tted him. He definately isn't a B.S type of guy. He also isn't a .223 shooter, just passed on info that I might have found interesting. He is more of a .416 rigby and .375 H & H type of shooter. But I will now have to bust his balls about this one. Thanks for the info guys!!!

yeah , there is one place i used to go to and everytime i went in there the guy told me that ammo was drying up and you couldnt get any 7.62x39 and he was the only guy in the city that had it ! Thing is is that i had previously bought some from another store and then got a case of the milsurp stuff! He told me he has been in the buisness for 20 years and so on , another funny thing is after he tells me all this , I go into his store about a week ago and hes got cases of the czech milsurp stuff everywhere!!! All this after he tells me that ammo is drying up! I would take anything a guy behind the counter tells you with a grain of salt.
 
I'm glad to hear it's only a rumour, because I could only get 2 boxes at Wholesale Sports in Lethbridge. I talked our local Co-Op into stocking it but they can't seem to get any...warehouses are backordered. Perhaps just a high demand at this time of year. I am definitely going to buy some reloading equipment!
 
It's a rumour and nothing else. I called Black Hills yesterday and spoke to them about fullfilling an order for 100000 rounds in .223. They said they keep 15000-20000 on hand at any given time, but for an order of that size they'd do a special production run. Didn't appear to be a big deal, and I wasn't informed of any special wait times for the run if I went ahead.

As long as you reload, there will never be a shortage in any caliber! Components are always available and can be stockpiled easily. Bullets depending on the caliber can be cast. Most salesmen are their to sell a product, not be your buddy. If you passed that rumor to 5 buddies who all had .223/5.56mm (whatever), maybe 2 of them might run to the salesman and drop some plastic on his counter. He was thinking ahead.
 
If anything I've found it easier to get .223 ammo of late. Got a whole case of .223 FMJ BT's 55 American Eagle, something I have been wanting for a bit. I think when this rumor got started a lot of the ammo was bought by people stock piling and now that the surge is over the ammo is a little more available.

as for you gun guru, does he make 1000 yard shots in the rain, up hill with hurricane force winds and still keep his 1/4" moa..... oh yeah and all possible with a savage accu-trigger. The world is full of these people and when others can't tollerate their bull#### they end up working behind a gun counter for some reason, which is a shame because it makes the really knowledgeable people that work behind counters look bad as a group.
