General Purpose or Practical Rifles?

the 308 is the 303 British's and 300 Savage's ghey younger brother

“General Purpose” seems to have lost its meaning.

The sentimental part of me loves my Model 70 .375, for most things I do, it’s still the best choice. The practical side for work guns really doesn’t care as long as they’re clean handling and snag free, light as they can be for the chambering. You won’t find me carrying a Tavor, though if it works for somebody no judgement.

I could see a .308 Valmet carbine being a handy tool, a more bushed Valmet Hunter with a heavier barrel. The G3 and FAL are that, and I sure saw a lot of them in general purpose rifle use in Africa.

If we're talking rifles we can't have, give me an SVDS or M76; both the 7.62x54r and 8x57 have more jam than the 308.

Lol, there is only 3 ammo options for 303, none for 300 savage but 75 for 308 on cabelas USA website...nothing beats the 308 for this application.

Count only ammunition you have on hand. I don't care if it's factory or reloads. But do not count rounds at the LGS or further up the supply chain, and likewise don't count what you could reload if you got around to it.

"The majority is never right. Never, I tell you! That's one of these lies in society that no free and intelligent man can help rebelling against. Who are the people that make up the biggest proportion of the population -- the intelligent ones or the fools?"

Henrik Ibsen, An Enemy of the People

The Prvi .330" 208 grain FMJ is available, I'm guessing the Hornady Soft Point and Woodleigh 250 grainer are unobtainium at this time.

As long as the world hasn't ended buy more ammunition, but don't count it as part of your inventory until it's yours.

Until the zombies come through the wall it’s still relevant that you can pull into a store in Fort Smith NWT, Bulawayo Zimbabwe, or downtown Vancouver and buy .308 / 7.62 NATO when nothing else is on the shelf. It’s a neat trick.

I’d lathe turn good monos 4 thou off the side as well was the plan, or maybe a swaging die.

The last things on the shelf were 20 gauge, 3.5 12 gauge and 40 S&W. The 308 is the amongst the first thing to come back, there is a difference.

I don't think it's particularly relevant what can be bought in Timbuktu.

In bolt actions the Lee Enfield #5 Jungle Carbine or the Steyr M95 are top choices. Fast bolt actions, 10 rounds of 150 grainers at 2600fps for the 303, or fast reloads (the Mannlicher System is excellent) with a 200 grainer at 2400fps for the M95. Both have a mount that a light could be attached to. Put a green light and a red dot and you're all set.

I’d still take a .308 Ruger scout over a No.5, with the exception of striper clips it’s essentially a better modern version with better options available. A real recoil pad, better optic mounting, 3,5,10 rd mag availability, multiple stock options of synthetic/laminate/hardwood, better peep sights, stainless or blued.

I love an Enfield and the .303brit but the Ruger is a better rifle and in a cartridge you can find pretty much everywhere in more bullet weights, easier to load for and plenty effective within the 400m range.

The Lee Enfield can be shot faster, shot prone with the 10 round mag and has a better safety. All these things matter.

Just don't misload the semi rimmed cartridges into the No.5 magazine. You can get a failure to feed if you do.

TBS I'm sorry I sold my all matching Shirley No.5.........

Most of my rifles are " practical" rifles
I could make do with a 20" carbine in 308. Prefer CRF but not an absolute must. 2-7power scope sitting really low and backup irons. I like floor plates so there is never anything to loose. Modify the extractor face to allow the bolt to close on a round single loaded into the chamber and your good to go. Anyone who preps thinking of taking on a battalion and needing huge mag capacity is ridiculous imo as no matter what you dont have a chance up against any form of trained troops...if its zombies your prepping for.....zombies aren't real lol. In any other instance if you cant get it done with 5 on tap +a few extra single fed your probably not gonna make it anyways. Fun concept though and practical rifles make fantastic huntong rigs..
