I'm getting bored with screwing together the same old stuff....I have actions, barrels and stocks here but I wanna hear from anyone who's shooting a fast twist, high capacity 224 bore....like an 8" or 9" twist 22/6mm or 22/243AI and such....

Bevan King has a 224-6mm Ackley reamer. That should honk! :D

There was an article from South Africa about a .25-06 necked down to .224. They were using it with a bullet that was very similar to the Barnes X, I can't remember the name of the manufacturer, but I think it started with a "G". Anyways, the thing seemed to be quite effective on antelope. There were quite a few pictures of entrance and exit wounds. It was quite impressive.

Sounds like GS Custom Bullets - and it's worth visiting their site. There is a lot of interesting information to be found there regardless of what part of the shooting game interests you.

I had a 1:7 Gaillard that was very accurate, but I only had it chambered for a light cartridge. The .284 has been successfully necked down to 6.5 and to 6mm, so if you want to experiment with over bore why not create the .224/284 Rembo?

something like a 22-6mm AI would be cool, twisted fast enough to launch the 70 gr TSX at high speed, could change what we think a big game cartridge is ;)

Rembo,
I had XR100 in 22/250 squared up and rechambered to 22/243 Middlested. At the same time we fitted a 1-8 twist Lilja barrel and chambered both with the same 254 neck reamer. The idea was to use the Remington barrel as a case forming barrel, then make the switch to fast-twist heavy bullet loads later. The snag came when the fire-forming barrel routinely shot 5 of the fire forming loads into 1/2". Loads in the formed brass are usually in the 2s. 4200 fps 1/2'' loads have more uses than just making noise, so the plan has changed to shooting out the first (1-14) barrel normally, then torching it as a fire-forming barrel when it is good for nothing else. It may be a while before I get to use the rifle as planned.
I did have a fast twist 22/250 that I used with 75 grain bullets for coyote hunting in the wind. That's about every day here.;) I was happy with the reduced wind drift, but wanted more velocity, hence the Middlested.

I htink i read an article of Ross Syefried that had him shooting a 22-284. It was pretty fast.
:runaway:

Rembo.....
Last 224 I had put together is a 223WSSM on a RPA action, 9" twist, 27"(I think) Smith barrel.
Don't know the numbers off-hand, but shoots 69gr Sierra like a hot dam.

There is something similar already called the 22-243 Middlestead

I have one. Unfortunately with a 1-14 twist, but it's a very flat shooting rifle, nevertheless. Rick, the CHeetah, Middlestead, and 22-6mmAI are very similar, and they are screamers. With a 1-8 barrel, I think they would make a great LR, low recoil rifle. - dan

Why don't you try a 220 Swift?

IIRC, the 22 Cheetah was based on a necked down .308BR case with the small primer? Performance was a little better than the .220 Swift? Basically a great 300 yard varmint cartridge? I wonder how hard it was on barrels, given the Swift's rep for being a barrel burner?

That's the one Boomer, GS Custom bullets.

And here is the link to the article:

http://www.gsgroup.co.za/22x64.html

For those of you who won't read the article - max velocity with 40gr bullets was +4800 fps. They settled on a load that gave 4700fps, which was 400fps. faster than the .220 Swift.

.223, 22-250, .220 Swift and .22x64

read a couple items on fast twist 224's today....maybe I'll stick with a 243 bore.....have an extra long 700 here....maybe a 6-06AI?....should get a 'yotes attention:eek: ...even thought of rebarreling the Ti to 6mmAI.....but I am doing a 22-250AI for a guy soon,...so I'll have the reamer in hand....hmmmmmm..decisions...decisions....

What did you read that turned you off?

I'm just guessing here but I think ol Rembo didn't get turned off of anything, just a little deflection of thought. Sign of a true gun nut. And Rick's in the stratosphere on that one  :p

well...a fast twist .224 won't do anything a 9" twist 6mm will do....'cept shoot .224" bullets:D ....but..they do win in the recoil category,..not that recoil is a problem in these little guns but when you like to see the hits in the scope...you know what I mean..;) ....I think Salty nailed it....:)
