Getting started in IDPA in ontario

So back to the topic at hand here, how do i start shooting IDPA? I took the ODPL course and have shot my first match. Do i just show up in Windsor and shoot the next one or do i need to do something else beforehand?

Just send a quick email to the organizer to make sure you get a spot. If you are looking at shooting Windsor on Oct 23 then you'll want to email Connie (contact info in IDPA Canada website). You're ODPL Holster will be good enough, but she will still watch you closely the first time to be comfortable that you are safe. You will also shoot "unqualified" since you haven't shot an IDPA qualifier. No big deal because a few guys out there haven't shot the qualifier either. I'm thinking of going as well so PM me if you want to get a car pool going.

just waiting to hear back from the "BOSS"

It won't be a problem....Connie is great to deal with.

Her, Ken and Anna were my NSO instructors and SO intructors. Great people with loads of patience and a real willingness to help.

Guys down Windsor way are great to shoot with as well.

Gotta get it past the wife first. :)

I have nothing against training; however, I disagree with it being compulsory.

You aren't required to go to a driving school in order to get a drivers' licence. You only have to demonstrate proficiency at the wheel.

Drawing from a holster and moving with a loaded firearm is not 'rocket surgery'. A competitor just has to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction and keep their finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target. And every shooter gets their own personal RO/SO to supervise them while they do!

As for the rules of the game, a person can read the rule book and/or watch someone negotiate a course of fire before attempting it themselves and do just fine; particularly in IDPA where the CoF is more choreographed than say in IPSC/USPSA. They will probably go slower than the more experienced shooters but will more than likely do it safely. In fact, this happens all the time at most of the matches in the US and more than a few in Canada.

IIRC, the only time in Canada that an IDPA shooter had an ND that resulted in personal injury was in Chilliwack a few years ago and it was by an SO instructor that was certified by none other than Canuck44!

Accidents happen and they aren`t going to be avoided as long as people are involved. The individual was a Safety Officer not an Instructor BTW. The incident in question occurred either by an errant finger or a shirt tail being caught in the trigger guard while using a safe action pistol. A similar event occurred at an IPSC event in Alberta a couple of years later. Are we to end our NSO course and Black Badge courses, I don`t think so. Such accidents have occurred and unfortunately will continue to do so in the future, unfortunately. We all work to avoid such incidents and sincerely hope they don`t happen in the future.

Play safe.

Haha, is there really any other boss? I asked mine right before I offered my participation in a car pool! I shot a match with the Windsor IDPA guys a couple of weeks ago, and yes they are a great bunch. I'm looking forward to shooting another one of their matches.

ohhh....that's who you meant by boss

Well, now I am offended. :(

Oh s**t....my apologies Steve, I forgot you did my NSO course and you even lent me a gun! Now I feel really bad. There's no way I shoulda forgot that. (there's no egg on face emoticon)

If its any consolation, you guys were great too! Not too many guys woulda done what you did!

No explanation needed on this one Bob. NSO course debating aside, I think everyone agrees that the primary onus is always on the shooter. An accident shouldn't be attributable to the SO or the quality of the safety course (as was insinuated in that post).

I always mention in the NSO courses I do....the course can only provide tools and outlines for safe firearms handling, its up to the shooter to be vigilant about safety and constantly practice what they learned.

And that Sir is why you are exactly the type of individual we need teaching new shooters the ins and outs of the game.

Ah just playing with you bud. That was a good day up at Georgetown, when DH gets better, we are going to get them back up and running.

By the way, I still have that bottle of Crown, I am thinking a get together to enjoy it should be something we can consider????

Hi
Im a new shooter and Im looking for advice on getting into IDPA in ontario.
It seems like the IDPA canada forum is down so i cant ask there.
Are there any new shooter orientation courses coming up so i can get hoslter qualified? Also how do i sign up for idpa membership?
Im located in the GTA area so any club hosting the idpa new shooters course close to gta would be great.

Thank you

Thanks for stopping by yesterday. Hope you enjoyed Operation Rescue Hostage. Appreciate you helping tear down! Will let you know when our next NSO is going to happen.
