I have a gevarm in .22lr, it is a semi, with an open bolt design, I can't sell it, it belongs to my "wife" it was given to her by her father. So as it PAINS me to have a gun in my safe that needs work I figgured I would ask if anybody has ever done the trigger in one of these, it has about a mile of takeup on the trigger and then about 13lbs of trigger weight and then it goes all "wiggly" and then fires. It seems to shoot well enough if you have a good bench rest and really practice with the trigger to get used to it, the groups aren't anything to get excited about but it does ok at 50 yards. I made my first attempt at a thumbhole stock with this gun about 4 years ago, it seemed like a good idea at the time;) I'll post some pics after I take some before the weekend, i'll even show my abortion of a thumbhole stock!!

tks

there is a little screw on the back of the trigger housing when you pull the stock off. turn it all the way clockwise and the trigger is long, mushy and pretty heavy. turn it almost all the way CCW and it is a 2 stage trigger. You pull the trigger and will feel a slight click. then the trigger pull is much lighter and very crisp. Hope that helps.

Also, check the spring in behind the bolt. If the metal weight is inside the bolt, move it to the other end near the back of the action. This will make the action close with much less force and I find it really helps with my grouping.

At 100 yards I have been getting consistant 1.75 - 2" five shot groups. Although yesterday when I went to do the CGN online rimfire matches I was getting 2 - 2.5" groups at 50 yards :p

More on gevarms

Gevarm had FOUR different .22rf models for export. None were marked with the Model designated. Which one of the four does yours most resemble?

And, I have a pile of various Gevarm parts for the A7 which I recently purchased from a guy in France. I needed only the rear sight for my gun, so the rest of the parts are available if you see anything in the photo you might need. Sorry, but no stock

I still need to find an A3 and an A6 to have 'em all... :D

Mine is the E1. Thanks I had no idea what model mine was, and I had no idea they made 4 different ones, I've only ever seen 2 different models.

I am actually trying to work out a deal on another E1. I found it in the "junk" pile at my local gun store and man it is beat up, and no clip either. I figgured if I am going to experiment on my wife's childhood gun I'd better have another on hand in case I screw up in a big way:) lol

I have tried to find mags for these things in the past at gun shows and other places and when I ask "do you have any mags for a Gevarm?" the response is usually, "No ... Do you?" lol

There are 2 pins that go throught the body of mine that hold in the trigger group, Mine are not factory,(i think they are just bits of metal someone had lying around after they lost the original ones) any idea how hard they are to come by?

Tks for the info, keep it coming!

Pins are a pretty common comodity wherever you may live. If all else fails you can check with a local watchmaker, or car repair joint and usually find a pin that will work - IF you don't have a gunsmith close.

As for mags, back in the days of yore, S.I.R. had both the 8-rd and 20-rd mags for sale, they both were WAY less than $10. Now you're lucky (down here) to find an 8-rd for $85, and last time I sold a surplus 20-rd the buyer offered $175. By the way, the E1 is the ONLY one the 20-rd was designed for.

To use a 20-rd mag in any other model requires drastically changing the mag port - results is a non-original collector's item.

There's one guy down here who regularly finds these mags (both sizes) but he ain't cheap! When you're about the ONLY game in town you don't have to go cheap...

Due to the quick and easy conversion of an E! to full auto, our BATF stopped importation of the Gevarms back in the '60s. And gun nut down here went berserk to find these little guys.

The E1 was WAY ahead of its time. One of the greatest little rifles I've ever owned. At one time I owned 11 of the E1s while living in BC many moons ago.

A couple of mint E1s, still in original box, all papers, etc., in the last year have sold down here at online auctions for more than $500 each!

Below is an old S.I.R. ad from the '70s offering the Gevarms. Look at magazines down at the bottom... then have a good cry. :D

Wow! Thanks for the info, So what should I expect to pay for a beat up but servicable/operating E1? No clip, dents and chips in the stock, the one chip is at least an 1 1/4" and there is some rust on the barrel, and both the front and rear sites have been removed leaving a notch in the barrel. I was thinking in that $50 to $75 range but I don't have much experiance with these units.

tks

one thing i always wondered about the gevarm and converting to FA. Was this a feature of the rifle??? I see no other reason for some of the holes to be drilled where they are except for the purpose of converting to FA.?? Or are those holes used to inspect to make sure that the rifle is not a converted??

The open bolt scares me enough.. haha there is no way I would want that bolt opening and slamming shut around 600 times / minute with my face near by!

you may be a little low. $100-120 range if its serviceable that's with a missing clip

The big thing about the E1 is the magazines, or lack thereof. I've seen lots of posts here on CGN about other brands of mags that can be converted to the Gevarm, and group buys of new, recently made ones.

I was never motivated enough to check 'em out 'cause right now I've got 2 each of the 8-rd and 20-rd. I've actually been considering selling off one of the 20-rd because there's a big demand an outrageously short supply. But I only have two guns and one can't use the 20-rounder.

There seem to be a LOT more E1s available north of the 49th parallel. Demand down here is VERY high.

As for converting one of the E1s, starting from scratch with VERY limited knowledge (sometime in the early '60s), and absolutely no talent for machinery of ANY kind, I removed the trigger assembly from mine, examined it's working mechanism for about 5 minutes, figured out WHERE to drill a hole to insert a nail which would hold the sear back, completed the whole process within less than half an hour.

I loaded up a 20-rd mag and went out in the back yard and let it rip just a few rounds before letting off the trigger. I learned it was very responsive, and I could let off as few or as many rounds at one pull as I wished. That night, for fun, I loaded up a mag with every fourth round a tracer. Beautiful! All the time I owned that gun I never had a jam or misfire of any kind.

The gun is extremely well made and with its DOUBLE ignition, duds are nearly impossible. With only 3 moving parts, and NO firing pin and no extractors to wear out or break, it should last a lifetime of normal plinking.

Good luck with yours.

MY baby, beat but not broken...

I bought one new in 1970 or 71. I think somewhere around $80.00. The only problem I ever had was a spent case ocasionaly got stuck in the receiver.

i have one of these it was given to me from my dad he is still lookin for the 20rnd mag

what magazines is it that can be modified to work with this rifle

Like they say, notsorichguy, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. IMHO you were attempting to make a sow's ear out of a silk purse! You've got a great little gun just the way she is. Don't even try to improve on it. Nice pictures, by the way...

No one has yet improved on that cheap little E1 - EVER! For a utility take-down high firepower, NOTHING comes even come close - for the price - in comparison!

The other Gevarm .22rf are real pieces of art. They bring very good prices down here. But the E1, it's a fantastic machine!

I got rid of the two I long ago converted for FA, so the one I've got (pictured) remains all original. As I recall, I paid $25 for it years ago up in BC.

broncoo, I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention and cannot recall now. All you have to do is do a search of the RIMFIRE Forum here on CGN just using GEVARM as your entry word. There actually aren't too many postings about these guns.

You can also visit any of the US online forums and do the same thing here. One of my favorites down here is www.rimfirecentral.com

And there are many others.

thanks for the link mauser i did try searchin gevarm but it only came up with this thread ill do some diggin if i manage to find anything ill post my results here

Thanks wildfoot for the tips.

I just had this little baby out to the range and the trigger is a lot better, still a lot of creep but alot smother. While I had the unit in pieces I cleaned everything out real well and polished up where the pin holds the trigger and I think it made it a little smother as well.

The "weight" inside of the spring was installed on the "bolt" end and I changed that around as well, it really seemed to steady up the firearm while the action was closing during firing. I was a little worried that there wouldn't be enough weight on the bolt and it would make for light hits, but it worked flawlessly.

Thanks for all of your help and tips!

I am earning a whole new appreeation for this little unit, I am staring to wonder why my father in law gave it up?

If anyone has an old gevarm lying around they don't want anymore PM me I think I have room for 1 or 2 more!!

if you shoot hyper-velocity ammo through the gevarm (CCI Stingers) put the weight back in the bolt. Gevarm reccommends the weight be at the back of the action for all other ammo. I find that my rifle only ever has fail to ejects when the weight is in the bolt.
