GF needs a grouse gun

Stevens Model 58C bolt action .410. It is the lightest gun I own and that is including a single shot cooey! I think it is the perfect beginner shotgun and I've used .410 full choked for ground shots on chickens out to a little over 30 yards with no issues, just a few pellets in the breast maybe.

Myself, I prefer to shoot them in flight with a nice bird gun, but it is beneath me to condemn others, on which ever method of legal harvest they so choose. Will worry here about poaching & exceeding limits, etc.

my 2 bits only

This.

If all someone had was a. 22,kinda hard to wingshoot with that. Actually hope nobody would try,. 22 flies for quite a ways. Not everyone is a purist wingshooter. I prefer to shoot on the wing. Not all do.

I know her well enough that she won't view a single shot as an option.

I'm leaning towards a pump in either a 20 or a 410.

For those that know is a 410 viable for 20 yard grouse shots?

You will want to read up on the 28 gauge - your choice of "20 or a 410" is missing the one "true" grouse gun - get a CZ Redneck or similar sized O/U, use #7 1/2 shot and go...

Nothing sporting about ground swatting and it shouldn't be legal.

Come to my neck of the woods pal, you'll find it sporting when you end up chasing two of them 300 yards through tag alder and hazel brush you can barely see through! Plus there is way less wasted meat when you peel there heads off with a shotgun instead of blasting it out of the air with a wide choke.

Sorry for feeding the troll ;)

Cabela's had one for sale 699 they are not super uncommon. Light weight, bit more shot than a 410. They make a 20 gauge which is an alright gun for the same price.

Thanks Uplandguy. I bought the last Browning BPS Medallion 28 gauge at Cabelas @ $699. Browning site says they're discontinued.

Would love to come to your neck of the woods fella.

How far can a Woodcock run 400 yards?

Going to Have to order up a wide choke before the trip!

Actually that sounds like it would be fun! Would be a bit of an eye opener for ya, but either way, a day spent hunting is anything but a day wasted! Don't get me wrong, I don't mind shooting them on the wing, but like I said before, the country around me doesn't lend itself to wingshooting in the least. And truth be told, I've only seen 1 woodcock in my life, I let it be simply because it was such a rare occurance. Plenty of chickens and spruce hens to shoot anyhow!

To the OP:

What price range are you looking at?
