GI Style 1911 Recommendations?

Sam and armscor are great guns to begin with. Doesnt break the bank and even stock, they are somewhat good enough to get by. Once you start to learn polishing the trigger, they will turn into better pistol than you can shoot.

That's what I did ... and just added some nice authentic Herrret grips. Not a matte finish though, and the big Made in China on the side is ummm ... discordant. But both can be corrected ...

If you find an old original, all that's on them is 1911A1. No Norinco or Made in China. I got one last fall but have yet to fire it.

Seraphim is over priced. I asked for the price list and they are 2000$avg. With the top model being 2800$, i asked what so special and can i expect Wilson combat /Sig sauer quality in respect to their prices. All he said was, tou wont be disappointed, and i asked are they truly made in US or assembled in US to get around 922 law. No response. Anyhow, its one heck of an expensive Flip gun.

If i was in a market for a seraphim, dont waste your money on it, spend that same amount of money on a Wilson/Sig/Sti.

That’s interesting. I was expecting a price increase but not that much.

For those that say get a better 1911 than a USGI style, consider this (just my personal opinion). I’ve shot many and basically none of them made me like the platform in any way shape or form. Mostly because they had “extended/oversized” controls that made them extremely uncomfortable. My reasoning for wanting one is because of the history (without breaking the bank and getting an original), and slimmer controls. More expensive also doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll shoot any better for a lot of people.

Not a fan of the chi-com reverse-engineered junk.

I don't share this opinion of Norinco 1911's.... I've owned quite a few different ones over the years.... still have a few.... so, I am a fan.... a couple examples:

Norinco GI model, only replaced grips & trigger:

Norinco compact [commander] model, only replaced grips, trigger & slide stop [to standard from factory extended]:

I bought a SAM GI 45 ACP to make a gift to one of my friend, he love original firearms, after he got it, he told me that if we except the mag, it is one of the most exact copy of a 1911 A1 and that fabrication was flawless.

For 503.00 all in, i was proud of my move.:)

As part of a package deal, I got an Imbel 1911 9mm.
Umm, what's that? That's what I said when I first saw it.
It's made in Brazil, but not by Taurus. Research shows it should be decent quality.
Imbel is a Brazilian state company that produces 'war materials' for government use,
but also supplied Springfield Armory with frames and assembled guns. Not sure if they still do.

I'd like to put wood grips on it to give more classic look.

I've had 3 SAM guns and they were all lacking in something with regards to fit, finish, function. One higher end one looked like a beaver had chewed out the innards of the slide.

If the new Seraphim guns are the same Fusion ones that Wanstalls was going to bring in I thought the consensus was that they were dead ringers for SAM guns, at a ridiculous markup.

I've had an Armscor and an STI Spartan (armscor frame/slide I think they were). Both were leagues better than SAM.

I liked the R1 save for the ugly oversized sights - they may as well have put a Novak clone on it.

Norinco is ok if rough, crude, and a bit sloppy are fine with you. I put them right in there with a Tokarev - a blaster. Nothing wrong with that if that's what you're expecting.

In the end I said to myself that if I wanted a proper GI 1911 that I could shoot and admire, it have to have that Colt roll mark on the slide. All I've done on mine is to install an older style wide spur hammer, as I don't care for the silver 2D looking part.

My biggest issue with the original 1911A1 style is the grip safety. If one grips the pistol like it should be gripped, meaning as high as possible, the risk of nasty hammerbite exists. It’s painful and detracts greatly from your shooting enjoyment. I sold my Gold Cup Mk IV for this single reason, although I wasn’t a fan of the wide trigger as well.

I can live with the short trigger, smallish front and rear sights, and safety. But the grip safety needs to be replaced with a beaver tail before I’d shoot an A1.

I still have my Spartan and it's one of my best shooters I love it

My SAM commander GI. I really enjoy it. Shoots well at a reasonable price. Swapped some things but can always go back to original as I see fit. Might be due for some new grips actually....

I am a fan of the Springfield Armoury 1911A1 Mil Spec models. Under $1000 for a blued model. From what I have seen they are made to the same specs as those made during WWII. I have the silver version and it shoots great.

It’s soon time for me to make my next “new production” pistol purchase, and I’ve been leaning towards a GI style (brown/wood grips, matte finish, and so on). Just wondering what everyone recommends for around or under $1000? Not interested in buying a Remington R1, I know that for sure. Thanks in advance everyone.

I'd get an older Norinco 1911 and fix it up . forged frame and slide. and if you don't want to go that way I have spoken to several guys at my range and they love their Ruger 45 1911 pistols. or try to find something made by Springfield armories . another forged frame and slide like the Norinco pistol . the gunsmith from my range who has many years of experience swears by the Norinco 1911 pistols . I like the older ones. I don't like the goofy extended slide releases and ambi safety's . I'm old school .

Funny I have the same three 1911s you mentioned. Stock SR1911, Springfield Loaded and a Kotanko customed and tuned Norkie Sport.
