Globe Model 555 - (SVT-40 converted to .303 British) - how high should I bid?

A travesty. Globeco ruined a whole bunch of SA marked SVT-40's to build a POS rifle that has feeding and extraction problems. I would only own one as a reminder that bubbas have no shame.

While they fascinate me I have to agree, a travesty is the only term that fits, however... It's too late now.

I would not buy one due to reliability and even some of them occasionally self destructing.

I've owned 2 of these and while they both functioned well, I wouldn't buy another. I've seen two of them with the rear of the receiver broken off from the bolt battering it so hard and examined many of them with badly pounded internals. If the gas system was adjusted properly they might work better.

I wouldn't pay more than a couple hundred if I really wanted one (I don't) and would shoot it very sparingly if I had to.

Seems the more attention things get, the more expensive they become. Decided if I could get one for 200., good deal as a novelty, any more , a waste of money.

I have one I bought years ago when I thought it might serve as a parts donor for my SVT-40. I have never worked up the courage nor am I foolish enough to fire it. The last time there was a thread on these, I think I checked mine to see if it was SA. I think it was.:(

They are, however, a rather awkward piece of Canadiana. When you hear other horror stories, like using original military stocks from "sporterized" Lee Enfields for firewood, etc., this is par for the course.

This brings to mind a USA site I looked at, where the posters were jumping over each other telling about the 1909, 1908, 1935 98's they had hacked up to make "custom" sporters. Yeah, I know, I know. This was the thing to do in the good old days. Yes, I've heard the $5 Lee Enfield stories - by the dozens.:)

I'm fascinated by how close to the breech the gas is tapped off- on SVT it's quite close to the muzzle. Furhter back means higher pressure acting on the mechanism and earlier unlatching of the bolt. Don't think I'd be in a hurry to buy one let alone shoot it.

Well, it's already headed north of $400 - which was my cutoff limit for a "novelty" purchase.

I was kind of interested in it for the sake of having a semi-auto .303, and I already have (and am fairly familiar with) the SVT-40.

Funny, I didn't think it would touch off quite this discussion. I had never heard of these guns until this morning, and you guys step up to provide an education (or at least a lot of opinions :nest: ).

The auction doesn't end until tomorrow night, I'll keep an eye on it and see what it goes for.

Now that I know exactly what I'm looking at, I'll keep it at the back of my mind. If I come across a deal on one, I'll probably take a flyer on it if I have the spare $$ at the time. Right now, north of $400 is a bit stiff when I can get another proper SVT for around that price.

I think there is one in the EE right now

If one were to remove the gas cylinder, and perhaps plug the gas hole in the barrel, either with a little weld or a set screw, you could make it into a straight pull bolt action gun. Might be a lot safer and a lot easier on the receiver. No more beating the thing to death.

Once could also load up some light .303 loads to adjust how hard the bolt comes back.

One of the many issues is they put the cylinder a lot closer to the chamber than on the SVT, so the pressure comes quicker and higher.

They were in the SIR catalogue in the 70's for about 200$. I still have all catalogues from 65 to 80. Some very interesting reading. Some guns I should have bought and some I didn't care about then but do now. Hindsight is great.

Yeah, but $200 then is like $1000 now...it was not cheap back then.

And there was probably zero 7.62R ammo available, so Globco had to do something to be able to sell them.

Funny how that goes....now there's no .303 ammo and plenty of the Russian ammo.

Perhaps some really interesting, historic, pristine Lee-Enfields will show up, and some enterprising outfit can run a reamer thru them to rechamber to X54R...

Different seller. The auction one is in NB.

Heh, I know you jest. But if 10K pristine Enfields suddenly showed up on the market and didn't move fast enough, some enterprising soul would probably do just that.

What's the going rate per pound for scrap steel these days? That will give you some idea as to what a reasonable price would be.

Seriously, I think it would be worth a bit more than that for any parts that would be usable spares for an un-ruined SVT-40.

I've never owned a Globco Mohawk. I wonder if one disassembled one and removed the barrel, if you would have an unchanged, undamaged SA marked SVT receiver?
Or have they been milled and or changed?

That's besides being hammered to death with the bolt. (if you're lucky enough to maybe happen on one that hasn't been fired much)
