Globe Model 555 - (SVT-40 converted to .303 British) - how high should I bid?

I wonder what it would take to salvage/rebuild an SVT-38?

Definitely not worth the cost or effort for a -40.

I just dug out my 1971 SIR catalog. The 555 was selling for $122.50. FN was $289, K98 $42.50, $29 for No. 4 Enfields,

How times have changed. 1971 was a fantastic year, it was the year the world got introduced to me  ...

Winning bid on the 555 ended up being $410. Within my budget, but not for a dodgy curio.

The same seller was also responsible for this travesty, which apparently he paid someone to do to an SVT:

Holy h#ll thats gross. Is that paint or is it that a water transfer? Someone will be on here getting advice on that thing in a few years I'd expect...

Why in Gods name would anyone do this?
You take a very reliable and relatively accurate rifle in a stupid cheap and very plentiful caliber and convert it into a jamm-o-matic chambered in very expensive, not that common caliber.
Crazy....

well when they (GlobeCo) imported these back in the 60's-70's there was no 7.62x54 ammo and we were awash with left over 303 ammo. It made good business sense to convert them.

i don't know much but i think he's a crappy mason too, check the brickwork out behind the rifle

Take a look at the "Bad Monkey Gun Projects" page. It's like 5 guys that went out and bought pedestal grinders and buffing wheels, and have proceeded to polish the all living F@%& out of everything they can get their hands on, milsurps included.

What did it go for?

Didn't even know this existed until it came up on an FB auction this morning, and I'm going to take a flyer at getting it, even though I have my suspicions it will rapidly head out of my price range.

Apparently, a small number of SVT-40's were converted to .303 British sporters after the war. This one has the receiver grooves for a scope mount.

So, this one's a bit of an odd duck. How high would the smart guys in here go on something like this?
