I recently purchased a Glock 17 as I have always wanted to try drinking the Kool-Aid and so far I love it! I originally wanted a Gen3 but ended up getting a deal on a Gen2 I couldn't pass up. I was recently installing a new connector and trying out spring combos when I came across info pertaining to the famous "Glock Recall" for Gen2s made before a certain date. Looking at my serial number (FY*****) it shoes being a part of this recall.

Glock never admitted it was a recall per se but issues a service bulletin in which 5 parts were replaced at no cost. It had to be done by a Glock Armorer as they were the only ones who could order the parts and who Glock felt qualified to install them.

My question... Is there anything that can be done in Canada for this? Will Glock Armorers offer this service or am I on my own to source the parts (if so, where)?
Is it even worth doing? The gun functions fine but if Glock doesn't feel to is safe or reliable enough to put their famous name behind, should I get the upgrade?

Thanks in advance!

I owned one and had probably 5000 trouble-free rounds through it without the upgrade. I would've thought differently if it was for self-defense bot for range-only it didn't seem like a big deal. Back in the pre-Internet days it would've been harder to locate an armorer, too.

Well, it's been an educational ten minutes.

That's how long it took me, a guy who has had a Gen2 G17 for about 3 years but had never heard of this recall, to run downstairs, grab my pistol, strip it to confirm that I had all the "upgraded" parts, then just for S&Gs head to Brownell's website and confirm that if I ever did need them, they look to have all the parts listed.

There is no reason an armourer would be required to do a remove and replace job this simple. Mind you, I have had the slide apart once before, about a year ago, so I wasn't completely new to it.

Battlerifle - at first I thought I was being a little sensitive but I guess your sig and "Big mouth" tag line under your name proved my sarcasm detector wasn't broken. Congrats, you A) don't research your purchases ie. not knowing about a fairly important piece of Glock history possibly pertaining to your firearm and B) can strip your handgun AND search the Internet in under 10 mins. And that's with only having taken it apart once!? My hero!

I can strip my gun down to the springs and I can also make orders on Brownells. But, for the same reason I don't do my own vehicle warranty work, I was hoping someone else would foot the bill and time for a factory error. The cost of the parts by the way, is floating somewhere around $100.

But next time I have an airbag malfunction or some electrical work on my car to be done, I'll give you a weeks notice to order the parts and meet me at my house to put them in.

Ah, I missed the overture that your real goal was to have this work done on the factory dime. Glock is notoriously slow to admit fault or accomodate any customers who feel slighted. In Canada, a small market that is unable to put any significant pressure on their bottom line, I wouldn't give you very good odds. Your best bet might be if you know a cop who is in good with his unit armourer, to get him to arrange the work.

As to your vehicular needs, it's a deal, but we'll have to do it at my place: I've got a set of metric wrenches and shelf full of homebrew here, without those I can hardly be expected to do my best work:cheers:.

Any other suggestion or advice? Anyone had the upgrades done and if I do have to foot the bill, any of them more essential than the other?

GLOCK, INC. Technical Bulletin #920403

April 1, 1992

Glock, Inc. announces a production change of the firing pin safety system. This new firing pin safety system has been installed in all production Glock pistols since November, 1991. A voluntary upgrade is being offered to maintain the Glock tradition of ensuring that all of our pistoils are up to the latest standards in 21st century Goock technology.

Most importantly, the components of the new firing pin safety system are not interchangable with the components of the old systam and Glock will always strive towards maintaining this feature of interchangability while working to ensure future interchangability.

The upgraded firing pin safety system consists of: the firing pin, firing pin safety, the extractor, the spring loaded bearing and the trigger bar. The upgraded system is applicable only to Glock pistols with the following serial number ranges :

Glock 17 - alpha prefix AA - WF
Glock 21 - alpha prefixes through XL
Glock 19 - alpha prefixes through WJ Glock 22 - alpha prefixes through YA
Glock 20 - alpha prefixes thorugh WW Glock 23 - alpha prefixes through SK

The upgraded firing pin safety has a new surface finish making it nearly 100% sal####er corrosion resistant. Also, after rigorous and extensive testing, the new system proves to be more durable and has a longer useful life. Here, as alwyas, Glock is working toward maintianing its standard of perfection.

If you are talking about this specific recall, there is absolutly no need to replace thoses parts on your pistol, exept if one of thoses parts ever fail, then you will need to replace them all at the same time.

good luck getting glock to pay.. and as pointed out, it's very unlikely you'll ever need to replace any of them. Sure laid the attitude onto BattleRifle...all i can see what that he was trying to be helpful, then didn't flame back when you slammed him....classy BR!
