I recently decided to purchase a handgun to participate in IPSC, but I have very limited experience with firearms. I have never owned or fired a handgun. I wanted to buy a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm, but I found a Glock 17 9mm for nearly the same price.

Does anyone have experience with either gun? What would probably be a better fit for me?

Thanks

can't even possibly guess as to which would be better for you, that's something you'll need to find out before you buy either one. Both are great pistols. I can't use a G17 worth a crap as it eats my hand up, whereas the Smith fits near perfect.
Where are you located? I bet we can a couple people here to help you out in testing which one is for you.

between the two I'd get the M&P

but make sure you handle both before you buy, If you get a chance to handled/shot a bunch you might decide to go with something else altogather.

FWIW my plastic gun is Steyr M9A1...

Find a way to try them. Both seem a good bet but like Slavex one fits me (G17) and the other didn't feel good at all (S&W).

Between the two choices you listed, I'd get an XD! :D

Really tho, as others have suggested get out there and shoot as many different guns as you can before you decide. I really wanted a Walther P99...until I shot one!

Plus, you may find that the one you like the best is one you haven't even considered yet.

Eh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I quite like how the XD looks. Now the Tokarev on the other hand fits your description of the XD perfectly! All awkward and weird like geeky teenager. ;)

You have to find a gun for your grip. However, how do you know your grip is ideal?

A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to fire a 17 and an M&P .40 in succession. I was a better shot with the 17. Faster re-acquisition. Remember though, the 9 had less punch than the .40.

I went back to my Beretta, studied my grip, modified it, and began to shoot much better.

Suggestion: Shoot both. But be sure your grip is a good one. For example. some people finally get the ideal grip for their physiology, but then they find that their thumb is being screwed up by the slide release, or some other part of the pistol.

If I may, let me suggest: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4584332856867071363&q

And: http://www.handgunsmag.com/tactics_training/combatg_100306/

Practise. And then buy the gun that is best for you.

A .22 is all you really need if you CCW and put your shots where it counts. The 9mm is a fairly powerful round not to be discounted. Loaded with the appropriate bullet it can cause great tissue devastation. for CCW it is a perfect, easy to follow up shooter. And it holds 17 rnds in the mag and one up the spout-18 rounds. No need for extra mags at all.

I've got the M&P my Roomate has the Glock 17, We both like our respective pistols. However, my Roomate can shot much better then me. His groups are always well under two inches. I'am a new shooter and he has been shooting for years. I found the M&P can be made to fit your hand better. The Glock is pretty much fixed for fit. The M&P needs to pass the test of time. I took a chance, and my M&P has not let me down.

My preference is anything Glock...they shoot well and the biggest factor for me was maintenance....Combat Tactics had an interesting article about the M&P...sounded great until he mentioned that it "was a nightmare" to field strip. Personally, I want "easy"...maybe not the prettiest handguns but damn....

my 2 cents (1 cent US)

You can't let people decide for you. Both pistols are great, for some people one might be the greatest thing, the other the worst junk there is.

My advice is to try both and decide for yourself. We won't be shooting your pistol you will. :)

I have owned a Glock since 1990, it was my first pistol and it is still going strong with well over 75,000 through it now. I have shot the M&P very nice gun and cetainly a huge setp up in the auto market for S&W, shoots well, feels good, I prefer the trigger on the Glock, but which ever fits your hand better is the one you sould go with. No matter the choice, both are good guns, the Glock abviously far more proven, but I think the M&P will be a good reliable gun.
