I was going to order a Glock 17 this week, but stumbled across a few threads on here where people raved about the M&P. I have read a bunch of reviews and info on the internet and want to make sure I am making the right decision buying a Glock.

I will hopefully be able to handle an M&P later this week, but I have to say, I LOVE the grip and the angle of the Glock. It Feels like an extension of my arm. I will see this week whether the M&P can match the Glock's comfort. I have only fired a Glock 22, but really really liked it and found the recoil from the .40cal was quite mild due to the low bore axis.

So my question is.... If you could get an brand new M&P-9 with one mag and the standard factory sights, or a brand new Glock 17 with 2 mags and Steel Trijicon Night Sights for THE SAME PRICE... which would you buy taking into consideration the following:

- Durability/Longevity (purely speculation of course for the M&P)
- Warranty/Support
- Availability and price of replacement parts/magazines
- Reliability
- Grip Angle/Size (please only comment on this if, like myself, you find Glocks very comfortable)

The negative things I have read about the M&P is that people are having problems with the front sight working loose, the stupid internal lock, and the fact that rollpins are used a lot in it's design. Does anyone know if the M&P has a fully supported chamber?

PS - I do not plan to compete with this gun so that is not a factor.

Thanks!!

Go with the glock.

Might be a little cheaper
Parts are everywhere
Super reliable
It is truly a duty pistol (well they both are)
I find my glock to be very confortable

Either pistol will service you well, but I'd put the Glock out front. Parts are plentiful and very economical ($35 for new factory mags), reliability is as good as it gets, and if you're worried about an unsupported chamber, then buy a match grade barrel ($100 Lone Wolf Distributors).

They've made and sold millions of Glocks. If there is a holster design that you like, it'll be available for the Glock. If you want a .22 conversion, there's one available for the Glock. If some fancy new sights come out, you can bet they'll be available for the Glock. If want to be different, then buy something else! :)

You were quite specific ( makes a nice change!) in what you were looking for in terms of specs....
If the Glock grip isn't an issue, then the answer is obvious.....G17.
I really like my M&P (40S&W), but always recommend that people look at/trial a Glock before they buy.
I currently own three Glocks...a G17, G19, and a G21...these are keepers..
The only Glock(s) that I didn't keep were the 40's...the G22 and G35....much prefer the M&P in terms of perceived recoil....
Hmmmm...now you've got me thinking....I might have to try an M&P in 9MM and 45 ACP. (Just for comparison, of course!);)

I don't know lol

I guess it's because people have been making such a big deal about these M&P's, many saying they prefer them over the Glock, but they don't always say why :p But grip angle wasn't the only reason they were switching.

Maybe it's just the thrill of something new that's getting people all crazy excited. That seems to happen quite a bit. For me the Glock still seems like the best option. Simpler construction (fewer parts), a proven history especially in 9mm, fits me like a glove, can get parts very easily and for cheap... but just thought I would check in case there's something I am overlooking.

Thanks for the excellent advice so far guys!! Some great points you mentioned that I hadn't thought of.

I just got a M&P for my sister. She has bean kind enough to let me use it and I like it. I cant say if I like it better then glock. It has bean years since the last time I fired one. But my sitter likes it better then the glock she tried.

The M&P feels better in my hand than a Glock and from my limited trigger time with the M&P I seem to shoot it better.

You can't beat a Glock for durability, reliability and parts supply. Smith and Wesson makes revolvers.

I hate the look of Glock but I will buy one because I like the grip angle and I believe the angle make a lot of shooter shoot good with them. I like M&P but I won't buy one becasue of the grip make me don't feel comfortable even with the smallest insert and I hate the look of the grip.

I own both the G17 and the M&P 9. Both are reliable and accurate enough. The Glock is faster to field strip. The M&P has nicer sights. As for comfort, I would give the edge to the G17. I'm using the medium grip on the M&P which I find smaller than the G17's grip. When I tried the large M&P grip I didn't like how it felt in the palm area--it seems S&W only made the palm area larger for this grip so it really feels weird for me. I definitely shoot better with my G17 in terms of accuracy and speed but, to be fair, I've only had my M&P for a month with 400 rounds through it. FWIW, my M&P does not have the internal lock or magazine safety. Personally, I feel that the Glock 'points' more naturally but at the price that M&P's are selling at it was a no brainer for me to buy one. Lately I've been seeing some very attractive Glock pricing as well and if you can get them for about the same price, buy the Glock.....

go with what works for you. Both will be easy to get parts for, a slight edge maybe to the glock...personally i wouldn't even look at the glock in comparison to the M&P, the smith product feels and points much much better and I prefer the trigger....

Unfortunately I would never have a chance to shoot both. Unless someone in the Niagara Region who owns both would like to invite me. :D I plan on going to Al Simmon's to hold them both but otherwise, I have to take a blind leap.. kind of.

Everyone I know around here shoots revolvers, and older style guns.

Remember though, I am talking about a Glock with Steel Trijicon Night Sights. How do they compare to the plain factory M&P sights?

I qualify to get the Glock at a discount from Police Ordinance, so the Glock is the same price or cheaper considering the Trijicon sights are included for the same price as the plain jane M&P package... lol

Glock - nice gun, shoots okay, cheap parts fer shur...
M&P in .40cal? Yup... that's the gun for me. Adjustable grip size, tight slide to frame fit, shoots lead and jacketed rounds, cartridges are indeed fully supported. See email response from Frank Branchesi at Smith & Wesson factory...
<fbranchesi@smith-wesson.com>. "Hi Doug, the cartridge is fully supported, it is perfectly fine to shoot lead bullets in the M&P."

I shoot a 2 1/2"group at 25 yards with 180grain jacketed using 4.2 grains of Titegroup.

Glocks are nice, M&P's are reeeaaalllly nice!

I've seen the mag fall out of a guy's M&P 9 half way through a string, and heard the same thing happening to a couple others. Apparently this occurred with the first gen guns. Weak mag release spring, or something.

If you want to go with an M&P I wouldn't let this stop you. S&W will make the pistol 'good'. A friend had this issue with his M&P 40 and the issue was resolved very quickly by the store where he bought it from. I haven't had this issue with my M&P 9.
