Glock 17 vs. M&P 9... purchase advice needed

How do they compare to the plain factory M&P sights?
M&P comes with Novak 3 dot sights, they're great!

If the Glock points well for you, and the price is reasonable it's not a bad choice. The issue many shooters have with the Glock is the grip size. The Smith has an adjustable grip. The Trijicon sights are decent, but I don't shoot at night, so they're not a huge plus for me. I personally would not shoot lead bullets through a Glock with out cleaning it after every trip to the range. The Glock trigger is pretty bad, the Smith a good bit better. The shooting dynamics are similar, but for me it's easier to shoot quickly with the Smith, the sights have enough air around them that they are easier to pickup as they come back on target.
YMMV

Shooting lead bullets is not something I am concerned about. The only reason I mentioned the night sights is because they are fine dot sights as opposed to the standard factory Glock U rear sight etc...

Can you seriously buy a fully supported Glock replacment barrel for $100? Is it a good brand?

Thanks

$99.95 U.S. and from what I've read on GlockTalk.com, they're a decent choice and you can shoot lead through them if you want. Just don't get the black ones because the finish flakes off and looks like crap after very little use. I was told LWD will ship barrels to Canada.

I didn't care much for a used first gen G17... problems with extraction/feeding, especially (but not exclusively) with handloads. So I sold it and a M&P is on the way down from Armco in PG. I got to fondle a M&P at Island Outfitters and liked it. The adjustable grip is a bonus for my wife. Also, warranty service can be handled right here on the Island through MD Charlton. We'll see about the handload issue after it arrives...

I have a Glock 22 and a Springfield Armory XD .40 ... I like the Glock a little better than the Springfield. The Glock is lighter, shorter, and for me, more accurate, even though the Springfield is more ergonomic. I recently handled an M&P, and it felt really good in my hand. I'm sure I'll end up buying one soon. The bottom line with any handgun, in my opinion, is what feels best to you.

Smith and Wesson makes revolvers.
Shoot one, it might surprise you.

S&W is trying to move in a new direction with this pistol and I think they did a great job, the only question is the long term reliability. They are too new to speculate on a long term basis. I have not had one single problem with my M&P9:)

M&P requires a tool to take it down (its in the handle).

Tool is not "required" it just makes it easier for guys like me that have sausage fingers.:) If you can flick the little lever down with your finger go for it. At least you don't have to pull the trigger to field strip. The "tool" as you call it is what holds the interchangeable grips on.

You don't need to use "the tool".... actually don't use it!

The only time you actually need to remove it is when you're changing the backstraps... get the M&P you won't regret it.

Shot both.... own the M&P. More comfortable and a solid pistol. The Glock seems 'cheaper' to me. More accessories available for the Glock from what I have seen.

Glocks are great handguns with a very good record. Parts and mags are cheap ,and service work on Glocks are easy. But you should buy what you like and what feels good to you.I do like S&W MP line of pistols and the new grips are a great idea and the price is very fair.I have a Glock 17 and 20 and love them, they have been vey good to me.Good luck !

My M&P 9mm arrived today from Armco :)

Just one question - I'm having quite a time removing the "frame tool" from the grip. Instructions say to turn it 1/4 of a turn and then pull it out, but nobody here can seem to make that work...

:canadaFlag:
The "frame tool" is a bit of a PITA... Other than that.. The M&P is a VERY.. solid gun to own. Handles really well..

Had mine out today and put 10 rounds in about 2 inches from 15 yards. Hungry liked it too.... LOL :D

Hope to do better with it next year at the service pistol stuff...

it's pretty stiff the first time you do it... here's what I did; hold the gun upride down as if you were to shoot it with your 'pinky' (mag well pointing up), now use an edge of a table and press the 'grip tool' on the top (muzzle pointing at the floor) and turn the gun while pushing it down. It worked for me...

Just in case you're new to firearms and really believe this, S&W has been making semi-auto handguns for about 40 or so years.... But if you were just trying to emphasize what S&W is most famous for, then carry on. :D

***EDITED TO ADD***

Oh, and I have owned both Glocks and M&Ps. My personal preference is for the M&P. They're both great guns, but the M&P fits my hand much better.
