So I'm trying to decide a Gen 4 Glock 22 or a Smith&Wesson M&P in 40 cal.
I already have a 1911 and a 10mm so I thought I'd try something new and exciting. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I purchased the M&P after trying both. I hope to get a Glock at some point, but I shot better with the Smith. That is what worked for me.

I like Gen4 Glocks...have a Gen2 G22 on the way :) but M&P is a nice gun as well; when I had one was pretty happy with it. Should've kept it... :( IMO it has more style, better sights from the factory, nicer grip.

Get a 9 instead of .40 tho!

In .40, the M&P is definitely the best choice of the two. While there are certainly many individual trouble-free examples, Glocks in other calibres are more likely to have issues than the 9mm ones. In addition, it appears that Glock needs to address some issues with the 4th Generation models before they they can be considered up to the same standard as the 3rd Generation models.

tomato - tomaato
both are good guns - get which one fits you and you shoot well
if you can try and get to handle and or shoot them both before buying.

At the risk of POing soom new shooters - its not the gun but the shooter.
Any modern semi auto in good repair and reasonably clean is very reliable. the difference in performance is 95 percent the shooter not the gun. It seems this thread comes up every two weeks or so and my advice is as above

just my 2 cents - not trying to offend anyone.

That sounds like a nigh impossible decision! I was the same way, but went with a Glock because of price discount.

Agree with the boys here, stay away from .40 cal. 9mm is the way to go. If you need a larger caliber go with .357 sig, .45 ACP, or 10mm

So are you saying go with a steel gun for the 40 cal? I've shot a buddies glock 17 . I liked it but it had a barstow barrel and adjustable sights wich adds to the price. Another buddie has been issued the M&P in 40 cal. for police work and he really likes it. They changed from the berreta 96. He's also a tactical sgt. so he knows his way around a handgun. I have not owned a 9mm in years. Though I went threw quite a few in the army.

I would recommend going with 9mm as well. Main reason it's just way cheaper to shoot. Factory ammo is way cheaper, also even if you reload in my experiences the brass seems more plentiful. My buddy and I reload, when we go to the range we keep our brass and grab whatever is lying around (including .40 and .45) and have so much more 9mm it's not even funny!

I agree with Ampegor on 95% the shooter, especially when it comes to accuracy etc etc. Either of these guns are more accurate than most of us shooting them.

I have an M&P9 and my buddy has a Glock17. They're both great, you'd be happy with whatever one. I know you asked about the .40cal, i'm sure they're great too, but i can only give my experience with the 9mm. Hope this helped! Best of luck :)

I have had both and prefer the S&W M&P .40 over the Glock 22, they are both great pistols. I put over 10k on my Glock with not one issue with it.

I did not like the magazine disconnect in the S&W (safety feature), so I removed it.

If you are already shooting a .45ACP and 10mm then instead of .40 cal personally I'd go with something in 9mm.

But on your choices in .40 I'd go with the Glock 22.

NAA.

Thanks for the imput. I'm going to play with my buddies glock 17 a bit more and see if that decides it. I guess I wonder what the accuracy will be with out the upgrades.

I have had/shot/owned a glock 17, 21, 22, 34 and m&p 40. 9mm is the way to go for target shooting. If you want to go bigger go .45. The price difference does not justify the snappier .40 cal kick. I find the .40 cal to be way snappier than the .45, and generally, at 3 dollars less for a 50 round box, id rather be shooting a nice .45 cal than a in between roudnd.

One gun to choose for a .40 cal round is the HK USP. It was designed around that cartridge.

If you are already shooting a .45ACP and 10mm then instead of .40 cal personally I'd go with something in 9mm.

If he already has a 10mm and reloads (and I think all 10mm shooters do as retail on 10mm ammo sucks) then the .40 makes more sense due to the common bullets. At least that is why I went .40 instead of 9mm. I already had a buttload of 180 grn bullets waiting to be used. 10mm and 10mm Special. ;)

As other have said go with the gun you shoot best. For me that was the Glock but I opted for a 23 over the 22.

If you go with the .40 in either you can get 9mm conversion bbls and mags then you can have the best of both worlds. I personally consider a person with a 9mm handgun unprepared for the Zombie invasion
