Go to powder for .270 Winchester?

Yes Pete, I followed Jack O'Connor for a lot of years.
And here is the hand written answer to my question to him.
A sister in law asked me to sell the Winchester Model 21 shotgun that had belonged to my deceased brother, so I contacted Jack for value advice.
The price may seem low, but the gun was manufactured in 1948, which turned out to be of lower quality.
I had hand written 12 gauge, but he thought my 2 was a 6, I presume.

Bruce, Very interesting that we both received and hung onto our letters from "The Man"!! The younger guys on here will probably not understand why we were so impressed with Jack and all his knowledge on firearms and shooting. The 1960's for me was "the dark age" of rifle ballistics, shotgun fit and so much more.We could not "google" anything back then.......Sources of sound knowledge on anything firearms related was very scarce.......Many/most firearms users in our respective communities were not well informed at all. For a young man thirsting for that knowledge "Jack"s written word" was indeed " Gospel Like" !!!

I believe that the SC stands for short cut, so that it can meter better. Dont quote me. :)

As Eagleye says, its suppose to be the same load data

Your correct, SC stands for short cut. I have used both h4831 and h4831sc in my 270 win using the same powder charge and never noticed any difference in accuracy. Both are excellent powder for the 270 win.

I ran 56gr of IMR4831/130gr Hornady's for 40 years on moose, deer + black bear. This past fall a WT buck, cow moose ,mulie doe and a Mulie buck fell to the same load.

Worked a load for my good friends Rem 700 22" 270 win, gun was bedded and trigger 1.5lbs using Nosler Accubonds & ballistic Tips 140gr
Powder RL 17 3 shots at 100y .345" 3 at 300y 1.95" never fired a factory gun any better than this one
Speed 3015 fps
RL 17 max load primers getting flat , no stiff bolt
manitou

I also have had good with those same bullets both on paper and critter. I had RL26 for my propellant though and it is fantastic if you can find some
Yes. I've read reports of success with RL26 particularly with the heavier bullets--mainly 150s. A number of guys are getting higher velocity with the 150s with RL26 than with any other powder.
