Go to powder for 45 ACP

I think most would agree that 231 is near on the old standby...but don't let that stop you from trying something different.
I'm liking VihtaVouri N340 - It is clean and cool but a bit on the expensive side.

I really like titegroup for the 45.Economical,consistent,meters very well.Lots of load data available as well.Ive also had good luck with 231,bit more dirty than TG I think though

Bullseye is the classic .45 ACP powder. It was what was loaded in the original GI issued ammo from what I understand.

4.5 grains and a 200 grain LSWC is pretty much all you need to know. LOL

P.S. You can use the same load with a 230 grain RN no problems either.

Are you reloading any other calibers? I use 231, and am very happy with it. I chose it because it also works for .38 spl.
I didnt want to keep switching powders, (one less thing to screw up).
Incedently, after extensive testing, 4.6 gr. for 200 gr. lswc, was the most accurate and cycles great through my M&P.
(3.4 gr for .38 )

Good luck

Collin

Are any of these powders significantly cleaner than WW231? I use 231 for light loads in my .44 Mag and it is very dirty in that, with lots of smoke and soot. So much so that I won't shoot it at an indoor range because it fogs the line in like I am shooting black powder.

I am about to start loading for .45ACP and would like a cleaner powder for indoor shooting, if possible.

Thanks,
Mark

I like Titegroup for any non-magnum handgun reloading for the reasons mentioned above. I would agree that it is a bit less smoky/sooty than W231 (aka HP-38).

W231 is my standard - mostly because it seems to work ok, meters well and gives consistent results. Dirty though. VV powders are supposed to be considerably better for cleaner burning and better velocities.

I would agree with saskcop... I have switched over to using VV N320 for 45 ACP. It is a very clean burning powder and it meters well in a powder measure. I use it for IDPA shooting and 5.2 grains with a 200 grain plated bullets gives velocities over 165 PF. Also a soft shooting load..

Titegroup, has produced most accurate results at our club, looks like tg, unique and 231 are the favorites. They all work well, my favorite is titegroup, 5.2 gr with 185 gr nosler comp hp's
