Going to Hunt with a Silent Load... :)

No test medium is going to be perfect, except what you are actually shooting (in this case a deer)

What I showed is how easily a load like this is slowed down to a halt. None of the cow scraps were densely packed in the bucket or the bag. After hitting a few bits of cow the bullet came to a halt.

The fact that the scraps were loose in the bag would result in LESS penetration then if everything waqs packed tight. I agree that further testing is required.

Hey CC, there has to be some road kill around somewhere - finding a warm one may require some luck! :)

I'm not sure about that....air pockets between the scraps would have less friction and offer less resistance to the bullet.

Put a couple layers of kevlar up against a hard surface and bullets will zip on through, hang them loose and the give in the material will absorb / spread the energy of the projectile, slowing and stopping the bullet.

I believe that if the material hit - in this case fat with some meat scraps - was held firmly the bullet would force through, much like CC's 2x4 test. I had a friend take a wildlife immobilization course in which they used a dart gun. They had a frozen grizzly carcass for practicing on, and he managed to drive a dart right through the chest of the large bear, and on out the other side. Now granted, he was using a heavy charge to drive the dart as they were trying to show how bad choosing the wrong settings and power charge could be, but chances are that an unfrozen carcass would have absorbed more energy on impact and the dart would not have traveled nearly as far.

That is how I understand the penetration of projectiles to behave. You are definitely correct that the only true test medium is the subject you intend to shoot, which is why I mentioned roadkill. The main difference in roadkill vs. a live deer at this time of year is the temperature, and resulting consistency, of fat and flesh. If CC comes across a fresh roadkill while traveling this summer, maybe he could try out a couple shots, dig through the fermenting carcass, and report back with his results. :shotgun:

Cheers.

Easy way to find out is to place a dozen 2x4's with an inch apart, and then nail the same dozen together.

Although hard things like wood and frozen carcasses may not react the same as softer, moister substances....But even if I had firmly packed the bag and penetration was doubled, to 5", I don't think 5" is impressive.:p

Interesting work CC, I look forward to when you conduct a penetraion test of your own, a 450gr .458 bullet has some momentum over a 300gr, .452 bullet, but a 550 grain crater has some more yet. Have you tried ( or thought of ) playing with the heavy 550's? Front or backwards? If you had them at 300-400fps I'm sure they would give you what you want. Anyway, good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Just throw it in the living room and crank up the heat!

What? We're not going to substitute when it comes to science, are we?:p

Come on man, the whole board is on the edge of their seat.....

I have all of my 550gr Crater's already loaded so can't use them but I have several hundred 525gr Beartooth WLNGC Piledrivers that I could try just didn't want to waste them on these kinds of loads.

I'm thinking I'll have to pop the gas check off as well.

You are right though the momentum would be that much more with heavier bullets I used the 450gr bullets because I had 500 of them at a fraction of the cost of the Craters/Piledrivers...

but would this be a case of diminishing returns where I have to use so much more powder to push the heavier bullet that I will not be able to get a silent/quiet load.

What about using a bow?

:p

just came across this thread , has anyone done anymore with this ?

this got me thinking last night ,

i may have found a new use for my sks rifle , turn it into a slide action and handload some very heavy cast bullets as slow as i dare .

I can't believe I read the whole thing!
The only one who did any sort of responsible investigation was Gatehouse. Just imagine how little penetration there would have been if the plastic bag had been replaced by a deer hide.
I'm all for experimenting but this is just ridiculous and reprehensible.

but I got to finish it on April Fools Day and it was with my good buddy Omega...

and as we both know because I filled you and many others in on it months ago even before you did your awesome test that it was a scam post... :D

LOL! Camp I saw the great killer bear video of yours, remember? The one eating grass in the ditch. I heard the trembling in your voice, to think for one second that you would wander away from a street light without at least 2 uber magnum guns on you is hilarious. If you can't figure the significance of me posting on April 1 on a thread that has been around for months then I'll just leave you to your delusions! LOL!

Did the bear look like this?
