Going to Hunt with a Silent Load... :)

Kudos on the research, I'm just not sure I would want to test that load myself on a live animal. After all, it'll be you who has to track/retrieve if it doesn't go as well as you think.

But I'll watch this thread for an update/results.:)

This is fascinating stuff. Kudos to you going beyond the norm. I can't see why it wont work in the hands of an accomplished & ethical hunter. Looking forward to seeing the work in progress!

if you load the bullet backwards you are now hunting with a FMJ which is illegal. Just load the bullet soft point first you are not going to get any expansion anyway at the speed you are talking. The whisper line of cartridges all use small powder charges and heavy for caliber bullets to accomplish what you are trying to do. It has merrit but I think you need to increase the bullet velocity to at least 700 fps.

he is using a HARDCAST

I'll let you shoot me in the bum at 300 fps. Lets say 50 metres. We brought a 38 down to 300 fsp and it didn't go through a milk jug at 25. The bullet was in the water. But i have to wear some thick depends first. LOL.

I am now planning for next year to hunt blacktail deer in super thick bush but very close to a residential area it is legal to hunt there but I do not want to bother anyone or let others know that I am shooting.

Dead or wounded deer in someone's back yard=:(
Not so say it might not happen with archery gear or a standard rifle load, but I think fair to say you are increasing the odds.

 300 fps...that's the speed of an arrow/ paintball.

Testing on an appropriate medium(ballistics gelatin), covered with a fresh deer hide would probably be the best.

Looking forward to seeing the results of your work. :)

Andy, on your post you stated,

Good work. So very few gunnutz do anything original (because it's dangerous!)

You forgot to add, because it dosen't say in my loading manual that I can do that.

I think 300 fps is on the slow side. Would you shoot a deer with an arrow tipped with a blunt or even better a field tip? Some of them weigh more and travel faster than what you are advocating. Show the game some respect this idea is folly. I'm sure you can kill with a sling shot, throwing knive, axe, spear,or whatever your keyboard can dream up.
This is the kind of crap that gives the sport such a bad name in the eyes of the anti's. Lots of it going on already why add fuel to the fire. A 22 rimfire shows more promise and thats no good either!!!!!!

300 fps ? are you trying to hit it in the melon and knock it out
(Ontario Ministry Natural Resources) suggests for deer, sheep antelope goat:
900 ft.lbs as minimum
1200 ft lbs as adequate
1500 ft lbs as preferred.

I didn't thinnk too much of it until I read this. I think its a good analogy. An
arrow with a .45 diameter blunt tip at 300fps wouldn't make much sence for hunting deer.

Keep us updated with maybe a wet newspaper test video Camp Cook, I still like the concept.

I worked up the load in about 8 C then went out to Alberta and tried them in -30 C they worked great in the warmer temps and would stick or just barely get out of the barrel in the cold temp even when I left the bullets in my pocket to keep them warm.
QUOTE]

Has anyone commented on this? Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the barrel in your pant leg and the bullets in the cold?:D:D

A .45 cal. 450gr bullet will transfer more energy on the deer than the arrow or .38 cal. 158gr. bullet will traveling at the same speed.

IE. if you run a 1956 caddy into a brick wall and a yugo into the same wall both going 30MPH which car is going to cause the most damage to the wall?

most of the archery stuff these days are 500 gr total weight traveling 300 fps.
Unless I'm totally out of the loop? I understand what you are saying about the .38 true enough. He wants to turn the bullet backwards as to provide the largest meplat.
I seriously doubt (and hope) it would ever work. Trajectory alone even to 20-40yds would be a concern. Like the bow.

I hear those Ontario sheep and goats are really tough!
But of course, the Ontario game departments know all about them.

Thornily Stopping Power

Bullet Weight (in grains): 450
Bullet Diameter (in .000"): .459

Relative Stopping Power Scale of 38 with a 450 grain bullet, a velocity of 300 fps., and diameter of .452".

Compare to the below chart to find out how adequate your firearm is for what your hunting. (Suggestions below are relative stopping power points necessary to cleanly harvest the listed species under any condition.)
