Going to take a closer look at a 91/24 I saw at a gun show. From what I can remember the hanguard is cracked & it looks like a refurb. Anything I should watch out for & do you think its worth $285?

is it an italian carcano or a finnish mosin-nagant?

Generally no. Most M24's are either finished in a type of pine tar treatment, or a dar kstain with some type of non-shellac lacquer applied over it. Either finish is pretty common. The lacquer finish is apparently earlier and is often work totally off, but the stocks remain dark from the stain and the years of use and hand-grime.

I did & dammed near bankrupted myself doing it too. I have one more krop carbine on hold at epps & then thats it for a while at least. I got this one as a consolation gun to get over the port k98 I missed by one phone call at the shootist. Lots of m24 parts went missing during the refurb, sights, mouse trap spring & stock but ohh well. the bore despite the last owners neglect is the nicest i have seen on a m91.

Actually now that I take a close look at your pics claven, you don't have the modified sight either. Wonder if not all of them got it? Ahh screw it, its missmatched, time for a stock trim, bent bolt(in a vise even) & scope.

LOL. Actually, most M24's had normal M91 sights. Those with the later M28 type sights were generally changed after manufacture. Also, if the stock fits, it's been finn modified for the M24. Standard M91 stocks don't fit b/c the barrel is thicker diameter on the M24.

That rifle is very restorable. I hope you go through with it! :)

Well, I have the trigger stuff(liberated from a demilled m-28) so I guess that just leaves the stock. I should check some of the m-91's that I see for sale, some of them have very "generous" stock inletting. Who knows maybe they ended up in a m24 stock.

I think you HAVE an M24 stock. Not all M24's have the spring and if your barrel fits, it's likely that stock was fitted to that rifle and the channel already modified for the M24 barrel ;)
