Good .22lr for a nubie?

I have a S&W 2206 (There is one for sale on the EE with 4 mags) it is a great shooter, a solid steel gun. Quite hefty and well built. It weighs as much as my 45acp 1911 and my Jericho 9mm. I love these underrated pistols.

I had a 422. Was a Good gun till someone loads CCI stingers in my mags, and burnt my hand due to the low ejection.

What are these?

Tandemkross and Volquartsen make exceptional after market parts for the Smith and Wesson Victory and Ruger Mark Series and a few others. If you purchase one of these firearms and want a better trigger etc these parts will improve your over all shooting experience.

Its like adding high performance items to your car.

I bought a used Browning Buck Mark SS Camper about 7-8 years ago. Since then I have put thousands of rounds through it both practicing and competing in rimfire steel challenge. Still runs like a top and is dead on reliable.

I shoot a CZ KADET and a HAMMERLI EXESSE and they are both great but also out of the price range. I have also had a SMITH M41 and a HIGH STANDARD VICTOR which were both excellent guns. The HIGH STANDARD on EE is just one step below the VICTOR and it would be my choice.

The only reason I got the EXesse over SMITH M41 is that I had to switch from right to left (shoulder issue) and the 41 is heavy.

Buy that High Standard before it's gone!

I’d look at a S&W Victory or a Buckmark. Even a S&W 41 if you can afford it.
Having owned a Ruger Mkiii and a MkVI I don’t recommend them. They are fantastic pistols with the exception that the barrels are complete garbage. They have crappy accuracy that gets pretty boring at a range.

I've had several high end 22 pistols over the years; the only one I kept was a High Standard.

I have three different High Standards and they are fantastic! I have one Buckmark and it is pretty darn good, too. However, the High Standards can be a little trouble if the magazine doesn't feed right. For this reason, I would take the Buckmark for your first gun. A beginner would get turned off pretty quickly if they have any problems. The Buckmark is great out of the box. It may not have upgrades like a Ruger but it doesn't need them.

It really depends on the type of shooting you want to do. But I would say the Ruger mark 4 (although I have never owned one, had multiple mark 2 and 3's) is pretty awesome for a beginner.

That said if you want to shoot for distance and accuracy an old Browning Medalist with some ok club/match ammo is pretty awesome out to 25m if you can find one for $500.

...as stated above people like the old high standards, and the S&W 41 is also in there.. don't even start down the rabbit hole of Walther, Hammerli, Pardioni, Feinwerkbau etc..

Still waiting on PAL :-(

Still waiting on PAL :-(

If you want the High Standard that's on the EE - contact him and tell him you'll take it - maybe, give him some $ to secure it. The majority of guys on here are good guys and I'm sure, would hold the gun for a buyer, while he was waiting for his "paper work" to go through.

As I stated before that HIGH STANDARD is very nice however if you do not have your PAL yet I would suggest keep putting your money away and get a S&W MODEL 41. I had mine over 25 years and would have never sold it but it was a little to heavy when I had to switch to left handed.A MK IV is now close to $800 plus tax and you can generally pick up a nice MODEL 41 for just a little more than that. the M41 is gun that will last you forever plus unless you get VERY, VERY GOOD you will never need to upgrade to a different gun. Also a M41 is pretty much perfect out of the box!

Personally I would never buy a SW41. They tend to be Jam-o-matics. No one, I repeat, NO ONE that shoot bullseye pistol in the league I shoot in uses one.
For the flagship model of the SW 22 line, they are very unreliable.
A guy at my club bought one new from a sponsor here and it has been back and forth to gunshop and still doesen't work properly. Mostly FTE issues.

There ia a good Walther KSP200 on the EE (but it is $500 over rpiced at $1050) and they are great target pistols, easy to stip, easy to clean
Hard to find and find parts for though....but for $500 probably last you forever.

I would ask som eo fthe guys you know that have 22 pistols if you can try what they have.
Still go with Ruger MK IV though for reasons already posted

I did the same thing as you and wanted a 22 because it's cheap to shoot and it's a great tool to get used to handguns. I went with the Walther PPQ M2 22lr. I have quite large hands and the grip frame on that thing is super comfy.

OP, You should start making a list of the guns that look good aesthetically to you and then ask if they are any good as far as function and reliability here.

There are many good options and unless you are extremely tight for money you will likely end up buying more then one so don't stress too much on getting the perfect one first time out.

Double action revolvers are a great way to strengthen and train your trigger finger and control.... anyone that can shoot double action revolvers well can quickly master most any handgun trigger.
