Are you actually going to shoot it a lot in DA mode? I ask because outside of competitions most of the DA revolvers I've seen get shot almost exclusively in SA mode.
If you're going to shoot primarily in SA mode then buy the Taurus. Or find an older used H&R. They'll all be fine.
But for honest to gosh DA shooting there really is only one or two answers. And you already told me not to say the one that jumps to mind first. The other answers are Ruger in terms of the new SP101 in .22LR that is now making more than a token appearance. The other might end up being the new Alpha Project revolvers. I'm holding back on recommending it until I handle one.
Cost? The Ruger is up at around $800 here in Canada from what I've read. For that much you could get a nice used 17 or 617.
Charter Arms? Look up reviews made by folks that use their guns a lot and actually put bucket loads of rounds through them and you won't find Charter getting a good review. It's a gun which is intended to be carried around a lot and shot a little. The write-ups also suggest that tolerances are "generous" with lots of shaking and wobbling.
Taurus? If you get a decent one they can be good. But too many stories about needing to go in for warranty work much too often. Also their .22 revolvers have a reputation for a very heavy trigger pull in DA.
Bottom line? Anything you get other than a S&W or one of the rare Colts or something even more exotic is going to be a very distant second best.... VERY distant.....
