Looking at shooting just 50 meters paper benchrest, no hunting. Would like to keep it under $400 without buying junk, what fits the criteria guys?

I would suggest anything 1/2 decent to look through with a minimum 16x zoom that has an adjustable parallax, most likely AO (adjustable objective) in the under $400 range.

Fixed zoom Weaver 36x is real gem that the benchrest guys like.

**edit**
forgot to mention that you will prefer as thin as possible of a cross-hair/dot in the reticle...

Something in 7X32 would work or like the following:

ww w.amazon.com/Leupold-113872-Rimfire-Duplex-Reticle/dp/B006PH6AWO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1483017671&sr=8-1&keywords=Leupold+VX-1+Rimfire&linkCode=sl1&tag=gunbacker-20&linkId=7de159bd2e8f222d8860bcd363f5d076

For serious bench shooting at 50, the more magnification you can get the better. A used T36 or B&L 36X would fit the bill close to the $400 budget.

^^^ Seeing as the OP only has 2x posts I thought I'd add that B&L = Bausch and Lomb. and welcome to the rimfire threads!!!

to the OP. grauhanen is usually whose input I look for in a rimfire thread, you have been graced. lol

^^^^ duly noted :)
Thx for the advice guys. I got out of shooting for 25 yrs so I am not up on advancements in optics, are there newer features that are important vs say buying an older b&l or weaver target etc.? I just picked up a cz 452v and wont be shooting competition but want to make sure I get the most out of it.

I am just learning to shoot, so I have only experience with one scope... That being said.

I would consider getting a rimfire specific scope as the parallax on many is at 50m. A quality adjustable parallax scope is pretty expensive. The rimfire scopes are also in the 2×7 and 3x9 range. I have 2x7 and suck at shooting, but the magnification is fine for me at 50m.

I have a nikon, but you could look at some of the more expensive brands like leupold.

With a CZ452 Varmint you should be able to compete at your local club at some level.
By listing your location someone may be of help taking you to a local range and introducing you to what others are using.

There are some clubs shooting BR50 under ARA rules or some variation.
A number of BR50 shooters are now pursuing 100 yard/meter rimfire and with a Side Focus (SF) or Adjustable Objective (AO) you would make the adjustments to either event

Im in Oshawa and plan on joining Gagnons indoor range, I'd like to shoot other distances but the outdoor ranges are not taking new members. I used to reload and shoot handgun, c/f, r/f and trap so I have shot lots, dont feel like loading anymore and did the handgun thing.
