As the title says, I'm looking to sight in my SKS proper now that I've got him all cleaned up. I've got some Norinco white box sitting around, but not a ton. I've found some Federal American Eagle that I might grab, but it's like double the price. I plan on grabbing some PSP ammo for when I got hunting with the boy as well, and I'm trying to figure out if the Norinco would be good to work with until I go out for real or if I would need to invest some more without just going to the range with the stuff I plan on taking out with me.

Same applies actually to 7.62x54 actually, I plan on grabbing a Mosin and I've got the choice between Barnaul and Norinco, the latter being half the price of course.

Thanks in advance!

The Norinco white box is good enough for practice but if it isn't non-corrosive, you will of course need to clean the whole rifle after shooting.
Neither the SKS or the Mosin is so good that better ammo would greatly improve accuracy.

OP I didn’t read any restrictions (corrosive/non corrosive) so here is my suggestion:

Buy the cheapest 7.62x39 wooden crate that you can find. If you can afford it, buy as much as you can.

Cleaning corrosive adds maybe 5-10 minutes to a cleaning routine if using the boiling water and no time at all using ballistol. Added bonus, you will get to shoot more as corrosive is still cheaper than non corrosive "remanufactured"

Personnal preference for chinese ammo in the accuracy realm and price used to be dirt cheap compared to russian surplus. Now, your choice will be whatever is available. Buy now because it ain’t gonna get cheaper anytime soon or ever.

Very true and good advice. Gave myself the same advice and have had a smile on my face since! I use the wooden boxes for holding tools or the nicer ones get varnished and used as drinks trays on the patio in the summer. Extra bonus!

I'd go Barnaul.

x2

ive used it in 3 different sks and never had any issue what so ever.
it seems to be the sweet spot between price, accuracy and reliability.

I own corrosive and white box norinco (because they were priced well) but i keep reading people having issue with white box and i dont have time to clean right after every shoot. so they just sit at the back of the cabinet for the zombies.

it all really depends on how much you are going to shoot and how much free time you have?
