308 might be overkill on moose, but it will do the job. I load mine with 180 gr bullets. Good for moose and less destructive on meat for deer. 180 gr bullet placed behind the shoulder of a deer/moose/elk will be 100% effective. Fire one shot and then wait a minute. If not spooked, he won't go far. 50 yards is the most I have seen.
The 308 uses a short action, so it is easier to get a handy sized rifle. The Remington pump being a good example. The floating barrel tends to make the average rifle remarkably accurate. I like the removable box magazine.
