good all around big game gun

308 might be overkill on moose, but it will do the job. I load mine with 180 gr bullets. Good for moose and less destructive on meat for deer. 180 gr bullet placed behind the shoulder of a deer/moose/elk will be 100% effective. Fire one shot and then wait a minute. If not spooked, he won't go far. 50 yards is the most I have seen.

The 308 uses a short action, so it is easier to get a handy sized rifle. The Remington pump being a good example. The floating barrel tends to make the average rifle remarkably accurate. I like the removable box magazine.

The 308 is a fine caliber for hunting most big game in North America, but if you want versitility you should look at the 30-06. From 55 gr sabot, to 220 gr btsp it has the most bullet wieght variations of all the calibers. One of the best cartridges ever developed.

Oh, this post is coloring book special. Pssssssstttttt.....they are both the exact same caliber. And what is bullet weight variations?

To the OP - My order of preference from last to first - but then again, I'm told that I'm a special case! :runaway:

4 - 270
3 - 308
2 - 30-06

1 - 303 (I have a brand new, recently unwrapped FAZ No.4 Mk.2) - deadly accurate, fast action and 10 shot clip to boot! :dancingbanana:
