good all around big game gun

Hey guys,

New to hunting and I am in the market for a big game gun. I have a .308 in mind but my dad tells me I should get a 7mm. The biggest game would be a moose. Any suggestions? Would a .308 take a moose down?
 
No moose in the world can survive a .308 bullet through the lungs. Shot placement and bullet construction is more important than cartridge selection.
 
The 308 is a fine caliber for hunting most big game in North America, but if you want versitility you should look at the 30-06. From 55 gr sabot, to 220 gr btsp it has the most bullet wieght variations of all the calibers. One of the best cartridges ever developed.
 
700 nitro express will do just fine if you are thinking of hunting big foot to Gulliver.
or just stick with 308" with good ol hunting bullets which is plenty accurate and good for any game in canada.

Really do tell more. The 308 gives up about 100-200fps to the 30-06. I'm sure any game on the planet isn't going to notice that

That would likely be my choice as well, and for the versitility you've stated. Nothing shabby about the 308 and in reality there's not any great difference in most bullet weights, say, 200 - 300f/sec. Either would fit the bill.
 
The "new world" is hooked on .30 calibre rifles. It really depends on your comfort level shooting. If you are recoil sensitive, an '06 might knock you on your keester, 308, not so much. A close friend of mine has a 7mm rem mag that feels like a pea shooter, and will easily kill anything on this continent. I just switched down from a 300wsm to a 7mm-08 based on ballistics (and the 28% less recoil). Europeans have toted the virtues of the 6.5mms for years! 6,000 dead elephants, yes, elephants can't be wrong! and they've got the sectional density and ballistic coefficients to run with the best of 'em. Just judge the average distance you'll be shooting, the scope of game you plan to hunt, your own comfort level with recoil, and go from there! don't get stuck in "what everyone else likes", it's going to be YOUR rifle after all...

Good point.
 
Karamojo Bell shot all his elephants, and most everything else, with the 7x57 Mauser. However, it's true to say that he was a one-off, as those who came after him were only remembered by the places where they had been pounded flat into a pink paste by elephants who were not as impressed as those shot by Mr Bell. Courtney Selous was no shrinking violet in the small-bore/big animal stakes, and then there was that lady with the7mm, whose name currently escapes me.....

The .308 is a good choice, don't second guess it... 168 grain bullets are accurate and have plenty of energy for anything you have in mind to shoot.
