Where abouts were you hunting at?? I am down south alot but not too familiar with quadding/hunting areas.

I guess those of you who step on wings do NOT live in Ontario
if the Game Warden catches you doing that in ontario you just lost your truck the gun and whatever you have with you durring that hunt
It is classfied as waste of eddible meat such as drum legs
Also in Ontario you need to leave one wing on feathered for identification
you dont want to chance of loosing things to stupility in ontario
I dont know what are the regulations in other provinces or territories

Good shooting, you using low velocity shorts or l.r.? How many did you miss?
Normally I find that I miss about 1/2 with l.r. and even a bit more with low vol. but the lack of noise is nice. Did you notice the difference in feed in their crops? That will tell you how to cook them.

Well done, Bud.

I'm curious as to what you mean. I'm new to hunting upland game birds and I didn't know that the amount/type of food that they had in their crop made a difference.

Also do you guys prefer to hunt grouse with a .22 or does anyone use shotgun? I have both but I'm not sure what to take with me when I go out next week.

Apology for the hijack of the original thread....

Regardless of who considers what portion of the game taken is more (or less) suitable for consumption etc.....it's very sad to see wild game subjected to such indignity  despite the fact that nothing goes to waste since Nature's "disposal system" quickly takes care of any remains left behind. The very attitude is simply just not correct.

IMHO, Hunters/Anglers (and all Outdoorsmen in general) must display complete regard for what Nature has to offer as that privilege may some day no longer be readily available.

Came across this one some place in good ol' ON last week.....

Out west we have a berry which I call the grouse berry, it is a round red berry and grows on a low bush with small rounded leaves ( I believe the correct name is something like Kennickincki, hence why I call the grouse berry ) Now it has been my observation that the ruffies will have mostly the berries in their crop with some leaves, the blues will have mostly leaves with some berries and the spruce will have a lot of needles also. It also has been my observation that the ruffies have white breast, the blues and spruce darker meat. Finally my personal taste choice are the ruffies.

The point of using a .22 is to make a head shot only. If you hit them thay are dead, if you miss, you miss. You don't ruin any meat. The point of the low vol. is noise abatement. Often you are hunting larger game when you come across grouse and the quiet pop of a low. vol. is much harder to hear than the crack of a l.r. but like I said the l.r. are a more accurate load and when you are shooting at something with a kill zone about the size of your thumbnail at about 15-25 yards often through bush and often at a moving target it can be quite challenging shooting offhand.

Ontario Out of Doors(OFAH magazine) recently had a small article about doing this as a tip to easily clean grouse in the field, they did mention that after ripping the bird apart to take pruning shears and clipping the legs off and keeping them. Ive done it works quite well, BTW it only work if the bird is still warm does not work on a bird that has cooled.

While you are entitled to your opinion, this is not the place to express it.

The way to ensure we will always hunt is by sticking together and recognizing we are a community who need each others support. And that is far more important than your silly and uninformed opinion.

Bravo! And you are doing a great job of it!
