Good barrel vice?

Nice little rifle!
Did you rethread savage prefit threads so it will turn into the rem700 action?

The way you describe it looks complicated, almost needing 3 hands!
When myself have seen the process, there was no action wrench involved.
Barrel was in vise, 308 GO gauge in chamber, bolt closed on gauge (don't remember if ejector or extractor we're removed?), hand tight the receiver until it can't turn anymore, then torque down barrel nut using barrel nut wrench and torque ratchet.
Seemed pretty simple.
Once everything done, try to cycle in the 308 NOGO and bolt shouldn't close.

That is how I did it. Just mentioning that I have a selection of tools, and find doing it once with a shoulder is more satisfactory - for me. I have the lathe, reamers, etc.
Since taking that photo, I have made an extension to set the bipod further out, mounted a Bushnell 6500 2 1/2 - 8, and installed an AR brake. Want to get rid of the collapsible stock; don't like them. An A1 would probably be too long, maybe one of those short fixed body armor stocks would work.
The barrel is a Savage take-off. Just out of curiosity, I machined the Remington -16 threads right over the Savage -20 threads. Left enough -20 threads for the nut. Worked just fine. Counterbored the breech face, made sure headspace and bolt nose clearance were correct.
Incidentally a Savage small shank .223 barrel can be retrofitted to an AR barrel nut, and can headspace without use of a reamer, if the work is bang on. I missed by about .003, had to set headspace with a hand turned reamer.

While expensive, this stock looks compact and has some cheekweld adjustability to it

Must be a fun gun, small and lightweight.
That's the thing, if you have access to a lathe, reamers and all these fine tools, you can play with any action.
Myself, to be able to play around with barrels a bit, am confined to actions like savage, and using prefit barrels.
Savage allows a shooter, with less than 200$ in tools, to barrel swap any time.
That is a cool feature.

Going back to barrel vises, i am sure the fact that savage is set up that way, it has sold many barrel vises just because of it.
There was a time i would often see savage barrel wrenches and barrel vises on the EE, now that i want one they have gone dry for weeks now.

Jerry is hooking me up with a benchsource vise.
The vise i had originally intended to purchase, so it's all good.
