So when I finally get my XD 45, What should I get for a holster? Most of the guys at work use the vertical uncle mikes holster.

Will the drop down holster destory my pretty gun?

Hints on any style?

I use a flap holster.

Keeps leaves, needles and eain away from the pistol. Not overly fast, but much better for retention and general cleanliness

Looking at the hat, vest, shovel and location I would guess forester.....probably an independant or industry company employee? MOF does not allow employees to get an ATC as a rule :( There are more foresters with ATCs thse days, nice to see.

Another vote for crossdraw, shoulder rigs can get really heavy and annoying at the end of a day in the bush. Alternately a chest rig works well if built properly, it holds the rig in the middle of the chest like the radio harness.

Bob Mernickle makes nice leather holsters and will build anything you want.

Cheers

yah, I am a forester. Carrying a gun it like wearing hard hat where I work. Took a RCMP officer out in the bush one day, he was going to say something (I know it) but when he looked around he noticed he was out gunned.

I wonder if it was buddies DE 44mag that scared him.

spend the money and get a Bianchi UM84. Excellent protection and retention, you can take the flap off if you want, and can be attached strong side, crossdraw, or clipped to a pack any way you need to.

You can get them off ebay for around $65

A shoulder holster can be problem if you have to put a pack on to carry something, whereas a cross draw can be moved a little to make it work.

My newest rig

23/4there,
I prefer not to use the flappers. Some pics of my newest field holster, made by Bob Mernickle. It gives pretty good coverage and protection and works both strong side and cross draw depending on what configuration is needed. For scale, it is a 5.5" Ruger Super Redhawk in there.

....and as I mentioned previously I also like a chest rig setup, however the best holster option for you will depend on what you are doing and carrying, and how 'low drag' you need to be.
Cheers

Radio chest harness, modified to carry handgun inside the pack, under your radio and/or GPS, carried horizontal and butt towards strong side.

No bush or gear hangups, always close to hand, well protected from the weather. Probably won't work for them real long barrelled jobs, and maybe a bit bulky for revolvers, but an excellent, unobtrusive arrangement for pistols. Work your ass off and you'll never find it getting in the way.

Works for me.

+1 and then there is the Kramer Flap Holster. The Kramer is big bucks but if you are into Indiana Jones etc. it is one hell of a holster. Regards, Richard:D

I found that I couldn't reach the gun when I wore a shoulder holster, despite trying several types. I recently bought two holsters from Simply Rugged which are second to none in quality. They are the pancake style, and I ordered them with an open muzzle, retaining strap, and a third slot so they could be carried cross draw. One holster, (I ordered the second one later) a 12 round .44 cartridge slide and a belt were about $120 USD including shipping, which considering the quality of the leather and workmanship was a steal.

I think your XD 45 is going to give you a false sense of security, and will one day be found in a bear's poop.

Seriously, a Redhawk in 454 costs less than an XD, so what made you make the questionable choice that you have?

Dave & Amanda of Tiger Tactical are building me, as I type one of there Special Forces Tactical Holster AD7001 which they will customize with a flap over top and two speedloader pouches attached to the out side for my 4.5" Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull. I looked long and hard for a good work holster and pesonally believe that depending on the day you need a leg rig or a shoulder holster. These folks are Canadian and so far have been great to work with. The holster goes for $ 85.00 for a base cost and there not quite sure how much time it will take to do the additional mods but I'm sure it will still be quite reasonable. The great thing about this holster is you can get Tiger to make you diffrent pistol inserts so you can use diffrent handguns in the same holster. Very nice feature as I opt for a lighter firearm (1911 Armco preped 45-08) during the winter months. I wonder how those XD45's would work with the 45-08's. They seem quite well made and have a heavy slide and a rifled barrel that would like lead bullets......hmmmmm. Might have to talk Gunner into doing some research after Christmas :). I think the XD-45 loaded up with the 45-08's with a 200 gr. bullet doing around 1200 fps would be a excellent carry gun for the winter.
