Looking to put together or get a complete rifle.

The rifle is for a small adult of 5' and small frame so will require a short LOP.

Recoil isn't an issue but overall weight would be nice to be kept down.

The options wanted by the shooter include the following:
-Blued/walnut or similar dark wood.
-DM
-Bolt
-open sights but also scope ready.

I have been looking but not much out there for new options. Is there after market stocks available in Canada for solids? This may allow me to open up options for different rifles if I can just put a stock on an existing action.

What have you seen out there?

Ellwood Epps has a couple of Ruger Compacts in 7mm-08 that are awesome, except they don't have detachable mags nor open sights.

How about a Ruger Scout? It's a bolt gun with both open sights and a picatinny rail and has adjustable LOP with spacers. Meeting the blued metal and dark stock won't be easy, though.

Doesnt the 7mm-08 require a 24" barrel for maximum power?

As someone else said, look at the Savage Lady Hunter.

"Built with women’s-specific geometry, these Savage rifles have a shorter length of pull, higher comb, reduced front-end weight and a closer, slimmer grip and forend than other rifles"

Or you could just get an SKS - They have short length of pull because they are designed to be used by people wearing heavy winter clothing. Im only 5'7" or 5'8" and I needed to slap a slip-on recoil pad on my SKS to make it a bit longer LOP. Doesn't come with detachable magazines, but you can get them if you really want. Then you just need to buy a KwikRail for your scope-mounting needs. All together, under $500 for the gun, rail, and a magazine or two.

I would recommend a Zastava. It comes with walnut wood. Nice dark blueing, bolt, with irons and ready to mount scope in nice calibers like 6.5x55, 7x57, 308win, 7mmRem mag for under 700$. And maybe have a gun smith shorten the stock for a your shooter.

The wood working side will be no problems , overall weight is a consideration, light weight barrel is kind of important.

A few options I didn't consider so I will look at those also.

I would also look at the Lady hunter, very nice looking rifle. Honestly though, my top choice would be a model 7. Like everyone has said, cut to fit. No shame in doing that.

SO I guess, next logical question.

Who makes nice aftermarket solid wood stocks that are available?

Or should a guy just get a blank of some quality wood and giver nails in the wood shop?

The older dbm rem mountain rifles have everything you need minus the sights, most smiths have rem sights laying around they'd probably give you and just charge labour, or williams fire sights are a nice option.
