Outta curiosity, where in BC is it possible to shoot gophers? Anywhere within striking range of a one-weekend round trip from Vancouver?

Also, what's does shooting gophers entail, responsibility wise? Farmers usually haven't got a prob giving permission to get out there and pop them?

Educate me! :)

Point your car East, and go about 12 hours on Hwy 3. (Man, I never thought I'd hear myself say 'go East!') Once you get past that PST border, your in gopher heaven, the land of the free. I don't know where to find gophers in BC, but we have enough here to spare. Most farmers/landowners are all too happy to have you come in and clean them out. It's cheapier than poison. Heck, I've got arangments made for next Saturday to clean out a virgin field. They even offered to buy my ammo! Just don't shoot towards the livestock or buildings. And don't shoot near irrigation pipes or pivots. Even a .22 can penetrate. Then you've got issues. Be ready to shoot in the wind. And not BC wind, Chinook winds. Strap your hat down, and keep your mouth shut. The best shooting is always off the highways. Find an area that you like, and follow the gravel roads away from everyone else. One of the best places I hunt is about 30 kms off the main Hwy. But I know were not likely to see anyone out there. Good shooting.

"gophers"

Richardson's ground squirrels, (gophers) plus all marmots, are protected in BC.
Gone are the days when the Prince George shooters travelled to the Cariboo area to shoot them. And Lee Straight, the long time shooting and outdoor writer in the Vancouver Sun, used to write of trying out the latest fast stepping super wildcat and state the results of a hit on an animal as seeing it, "disappear in a cloud of red vapour!"
They can still be shot on private property, with the written approval of the land owner.

Hmmm... Thanks for the info! Didn't know that they might be protected in BC, guess they're not as big of a problem as they are in in other areas of the country.

I'll have to get a couple friends interested, and do a road trip to AB!

Say what? Gophers in B.C my friend are feared and loathed bloodsuckers. One look from these insideous rascals will make your blood curdle . Lead your wayward soul East where the "ground squirrels" are mellow docile gentle creatures.
Tree squirrels(grey) mind you are fair game here in B.C but are equally as bloodthirsty as the B.C gopher. Carry a big MOFO gun.
