Got a new Parker Hale rifle - how old is it? What model is it?

I was at the range this evening and I have to say, this rifle is more accurate than I am. I got three 3-shot groups at 1.25" at 100 yards. This was with factory 180 grain winchester ammo. The previous owner had 3 boxes that he gave me and I went to shoot them off just to get the brass for reloading. I can only imagine what reloads will be like in this gun. I would say that my overall average was 1.5 -1.75" at 100 with a few 2" groups but I probably shot too fast without letting the barrel cool sufficiently.
anyways, I spent 10 shots sighting it in, 30 shots at 100 yards, then the rest were spent at the 300 yard silouettes. I made dings on most of them with just a few fliers. But the ammo had several bullet tips that had the lead deformed from rough handling so maybe that contributed to some of the fliers. Anyway, I am really happy with this buy. I never thought I would betray my .30-06 family for "the other one"(since I have crapped on .308's for years without ever owning one. ) but I have never held a rifle that felt this good to point and shoot. If any of you ever come across one of these, you should do yourself a favor and at least check it out. I am amazed that they arent more well renowned. Until I bought it, I had never seen one before or even heard of Parker hale. Sometimes diamonds in the rough just catch your eye with a little sparkle.

.308, the little cartridge that could. :)

Wait til you shoot a deer with it. For a smallish case, it packs big punch. I've shot 95% of my deer with it and I've seen deer do back flips, forward flips, and just plain old flops. ;) Its never failed to do the job.

I have A Safari Deluxe Parker Hale (Floorplate model) chambered in 308 Norma Magnum. I bought it from a fellow gunnut here on the EE forums. With the 200 Accubond and a healthy dose of Norma MRP, it will shoot them into right around ¾" at 100 meters when I do my part. Velocity is 2925. Having owned several PH rifles over the years, I have yet to own one that was not accurate. The barrels seem to be quite good, and that Santa Barbara action, while not the most refined Mauser, is a solid, trouble free unit. Enjoy your PH, it's a keeper!! Regards, Eagleye.

I had to trade my PH in .30-06 and regret it constantly.
Shot 2" @ 200 metres with a Fixed 4x scope.
My only consolation is that I get 1st dibs on it if he chooses to sell.

I have the same rifle, plus versions in 308 and 30-06. I quite like them. I bought the 308 to build a C3 clone, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. Too many guns, too little time. - dan

I think part of the reason this gun shoots so well for me is the fact that the stock is the most ergonomically correct piece of wooden heaven I have ever held. The pistol grip and square forearm feel like MY hands and arms were used to originally carve this wood. I guess that when you get a rifle that truly fits your body, groups can be shot that are far and away better than normally attained by an ill fitting gun, no matter how accurate that ill fitting gun shoots. I am thinking that this gun has just butted its way to my go to gun. My Savage 116 in .300 win mag has just been demoted!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I was imagining things when I shot a deer at 30 yards and it flipped overto the point of lifting it off the ground I was shocked.I also Have the ,308 but do not know how old but it has it's character marks for sure. I also have a .270. My buddy says when hears me fire in adifferent location with the .308 Was that your cannon I heard it sure has a distinct sound.

I think everbody my age who hunts at work has or had a Parker-Hale at one time.So they were pretty common, much more so than the expensive Remingtons and Winchesters.

I sold a 1200c in .30-06 i never should have. It shot an honest 1" group with anything i fed it.:(

That sounds a lot like the old one I traded in at Wholesale Sports in Edmonton...A regretful trade, but always a feed problem from mag if you racked it soft. A full rack of the bolt & no problem.

I just got back from the range today, and I burned off another 3 boxes of factory rounds (gotta stockpile brass for reloading). Anyhow, I was dinging the pig/chicken silouettes ALMOST every shot at the 300 yard berm.
Occasional flier that I could see in the sand plume, but I am chalking that up to a barrel that I should have let cool down more between magazines.
ANYHOW, it is now confirmed, This is my new Go-To rifle. The .300 win mag Savage is now demoted to riding coach. Just gotta switch scopes now and resight them both in (Oh darn - gotta shoot more!!!!!!!!!)

Dad

My father offered to give me one in 30-06 30 years ago and I turned it down as I didn't need anything that powerful at the time.

I've had 9 of these wonderfull guns over the years, no sooner do I get one set up "just the way I like it (this month!)" than one of my bud's talks me out of it. My all time favorite was an early Safari in 308, had the adjustable trigger, but a bolt safety, rather rare, and the densest piece of walnut I have ever seen on a rifle. OK that does it, time to sell something and go get one.....

I havent even begun to think of adjusting the trigger on this nice piece of work. I am still trying to figure out how to "skim some money off the top" so to speak, to get more ammo without the wife knowing I am doing it. I guess the truck's gonna need its second oil change this month..........(with synthetic and one of those $12 oil filters. ) ;)

We should come up with a book of excuses or lets say not excuses to convince what most people consider our better halves to let us have all the toys we need( notice I did not say want).

I have a bolt safety on my .308 and a slide safety on my .270, I did not realize the bolt saftey was so uncommon.Learn something new everyday.

Well now you've got me thinking. I've found one of these in a local pawn shop. Parker Hale in .308, it looks exactly the same as yours. Its been sitting on the shelf for years, I don't think their guns are even registered. I fondled it a bit, it looks good but the bolt seems to be a little tight in the action. Its got $375 on the tag but I know I could get 'em to move a little, $325 anyways.

So here's my question: should I consider this gun over my plans of a new Savage 11FCNS (or 16FCSS)? What should I expect out of the Parker Hale vs a new "out of the box" Savage.
Any advise on what I should be looking at on the PH? Why is the bolt rough tight in the action?
