Got a new tumbler today

A bud of mine bought me a tumbler kit from Cabelas and gave it to me today. It came with corn media and so I loaded up dumped in some of the brass cleaner and turned it on.
The 257 bob came out pretty nice, but hardly any of the 223 neck were nice and clean. They were in for a good 5 hours, about 100 pieces of 223 and 40 of 257.
Does Walnut media clean better than corn? FS
 
I tried walnut a few times and was disappointed as generally people appear to advocate walnut over corn. Walnut makes more dust and I can't see any better results when compared to corn media.

I prefer corn media.

What were you using before getting the tumbler?
 
I tested my tumbler using the green corncob media and it worked great. I added nothing else to the mix. I will try walnut next to see if there's a difference.

Is walnut really that much better than corn? I got the same kit a year ago and I'm still using the same media that came with it after probably cleaning 5000+ cases and they still come out really clean. I just add abitt of car polish

Maybe the car polish is making the difference, cause I did a batch right through the night and many still had stained necks. Some of the other fellows seem to think from exp. that walnut is a faster cleaner.
I did a bunch of 223 yesterday and very few of the necks came out nice, had it in for 5 hours. FS

Mine worked good with the included brass cleaner too. I think that stuff was basically the same as car polish. I just switched when I ran out because I have all sorts of leftover bottles of car polish in the garage.
 
I've only used the corn media that came with my Lyman tumbler and it's been good. I throw in about 5 used Bounce sheets with it.
 
walnut cleans brass but it dosent make the brass look shinny but corn does. corn alone takes along time to do its job but walnut is fast in cleaning. soo i mix them both. in one hour i get clean and shinny brass a little brass polish liquid in the media speeds up the process
 
I'm not really satisified with corn or walnut. Use more walnut than corn though. I'll be eventually moving up to stainless media in an old cement mixer.
 
With either corncob or walnut the results are much better if you add a bit of "cleaner" to it. Brasso, Lyman, etc, all work well.

For whatever reason, I never really had much success with Nu Finish.

Now moving to wet polishing with stainless steel media.
 
Another alternative to the 'gun store' walnut media is the pet store ground walnut shell "Lizard Bedding". It has been working well and is cheaper than the gun store version.
