Got bison tag in alberta. Now need jacketed 400 gr .458 bullets. Where to find?

I wonder what they would do on animals at 2650 fps? That's my plinking bullet for the .458 Win mag, mostly because they are the cheapest thing around.

I don't know, I did fire one into a moose's head point blank impact would have been 2000 fps and that bullet did not exit, but then again neither did a 338 225g partition I used on and old bull one time.

Fired the Hornady into a sand bank to blow it up, impact was at 2000 fps and that bullet flattened out right down to the base and was about an inch across did not break up much. I would love to see what would happen to an animal at 2600fps, my guess would be relatively shallow penetration and a huge hole. Only one way to find out I guess.

I'm more used to .458 bullets that measure their penetration in yards, but am curious about lighter weight and construction for smaller animals. I think I'll stick a few into the culling ammo bag and find out. I'll let you know.

Buffler aren't armoured either.

If they were armoured.

What I'm going for here is more of a traditional approach using the 45-70. I have no doubt that my 30-06 or 338 win mag can do the job but if I am only getting a once in a life time kinda tag for such an animal I want as close to traditional as I can get with what I have.

Traditional would be a hard cast bullet or 20-1 bullet. On the other hand a 400 grain A-Frame will take care your bison.

I MAY still have a bunch of 400gr linotype hard-cast 458 bullets left from when I owned a 45/70. I can't promise that I do, but if I do, they're yours if you want them. They would be a hell of a penetrator at 45/70 velocities. I'll check tomorrow and post back here.

That is very generous of you sir to offer even if you don't end up having any left.

Well I do know that a cast would be more traditional but I don't have any casting equipment. That may be the next thing I get into.

It turns out I can't find those bullets anywhere? I'll keep looking though... I don't remember bartering them off to another CGN, so they must be here somewhere.

Congrats on winning that lottery by the way! I have used the Remington 405 grain soft points on moose out of a .45-70 and they were absolutely fantastic. I always thought they would be perfect for buffalo.

Having been Buffalo hunting before, I assure you a 300 Win Mag, .270 or a 303 are quite enough to drop them in their tracks.

Don't over think this, you aren't hunting ####ing dinosaurs.

I'll see you up there! I might take the .264 win mag...one behind the ear and lights out.

Might want to check regs on this one. I dont know about Alberta, but in BC one needs to use a minimum 175 projectile for Bison. they can be both the biggest pussies...just lying down and dying, or can soak up multiple great hits from heavy calibers.

Personally if as he says...he won the lottery. I would think the heavy slow bullets from the 45-70 would be ideal...eat right up to the hole. Having something longer range handy if you get only a longer shot, maybe 300 WM?? Think i saw you had a 338 WM...that can take the longer shots.

Traditional yes, but since you are unlikely in the extreme to ever draw this tag again....make sure.

I don't even know how to respond to this. You are the second person to make such a comment. Where is my post did I say that I needed a round able to shoot into space and take down a "####ing dinosaurs" or that they are armoured as another suggested. These type of comments do nothing to aid the purpose of this thread. I was simply looking for where to obtain a certain type of bullet that I wanted to use. I know that I can legally shoot it with a 243 and I'm sure it would die. But that is irrelevant. I will have a back up gun incase I need to take a longer shot. I haven't hunted as many years as others but this isn't my first time either.

Thank you to those that have given me places to find some of the bullets that I am looking for and to those that have offered me bullets to try.

Yes I will have a 338 win mag with me as a back up gun. The only requirement in alberta is .23 cal or larger. I do beleive that at one point there was a reg saying that a min of a .30 cal gun was required but I can not find such a reg now.
