Got me a 454 Casull Alaskan...

See if there is a way for you to recover a couple of those expanded. They are very impressive looking.

OP if when you fire those factory loads you find you have hard extraction of the spent cases this is fairly common with top pressure loads in a Ruger SRH.

The gun/cylinder can handle these top 454 Casull pressures but the cylinder metal has a tendency to expand when top pressure loads are fired in it.

What happens is the cylinder metal expands allowing the brass to expand the cylinder metal then contracts the brass case that is now wider than the cylinder is now trapped/hard to extract.

When I work up a load for my top 454 Casull SRH ammo I go until the brass get slightly sticky to extract then reduce by 1/2gr resulting in never having extraction issues.

Ouch! That's basically a factory "Trapdoor" 45-70 load!
Very nice work by Gunnar, too. And I bet you were able to claim the cost as a business expense, since you have an ATC.

:) Stuart

Crazy isnt it plus I had 6 rounds instead of only one.

I am now packing a 14" barreled including muzzle brake single shot T/C Contender carbine in 45-70 = smaller gun than a Springfield with a bit more ooomph 350gr @ 1750fps and 430gr at 1500fps.

Don't forget the weight of these revolvers and its effect on felt recoil.

A S&W 460 weighs around 61 oz. A 7.5" SRH weighs 52 oz and Caramel's 5:" will probably be around 48 oz. Felt recoil wise these .454 Casull SRH's are a handful especially with the Ruger grips on them.

Oh hell. I didn't realize it was that much lighter. And yes the grip matters. .44 magnum rounds in my model 29 with the wood grips are harsh. I got a pair of Pachmayr grips for it and it's a lot nicer to play with.
That is going to be a barker to hold onto.

First time I fired my 4.25" SRH with the Crimson Trace laser grips installed I couldn't move my thumb for a couple weeks.

There was a bump on the top rear left hand side of the grip that thumped my thumb joint so freaking hard I just about died from the pain but stupid me being a tough guy had to shoot it at least 11 times more.

Afterwards I ground that bump down and haven't had any issues with it since.

You can see how its ground down in the pic of the left side of the gun.

I am thinking of buying a scope for my TOKLAT Alaskan ( sound Klingon), any suggetion fron those who have this kind of scope... JP.:)

Leupold M8 (I think) is what I had on my 460 Smith

Swift 2x are what I had on my Ruger Hunter Super Blackhawks and Super Redhawks

I have removed the scopes and gone back to irons (for now)

Nice to have options that's for sure...... a red dot might be a good compromise between a scope and the iron sights.
Silver scopes remind me of grillz...... :) I prefer black as it goes with everything and doesn't reflect as much but I'm also not a bling guy.

You've got it goin on caramel, keep us posted

I shot .44 Mag for the first time, this past winter. I would have no problem trying the bigger boys, as the .44 was not near as "bad" as I thought it might be :)

Wont make a big difference at the range, i will wear my shade... JP.

When I first got my SRH I mounted a Burris 1X then a Bushnell 2-6X I now don't ever put a scope on the gun have a .330" green fiber optic front & stock rear sights.

I think recoil in handguns is very subjective, a lot of gentlemens are warning you of the great recoil of such firearm, we have to listen to the advices but at the end i think recoil out of a handgun is a very exalarating experience to the contrairy of a rifle... Powerfull handguns are so cool... JP.
