Today I got a Rem 700P LTR in .223

I like the slim contoured HS Stock, and it is far stiffer in the forend than my B&C while being lighter. 20" barrels are perfect IMO for a .223 and I like the heavy contour fluted goodness. Rifle weighs 7.6 pounds, which is perfect as it's enough weight to feel balanced and steady, but not too heavy as I walk a lot while calling coyotes (usually a fair walk to my stands). The rifle will also be perfect for killing paper as .223 components are so cheap.

I stole a Nikon Buckmaster from my wife's rifle until I figure out glass. What do you guys recommend? I'm thinking Sightron, or something with exposed target caps.

Here is a crummy photo:

"...the ultimate coyote rifle..." That'd be the M1A Supermatch in .243 we had in the shop long ago. Early 80's. Mind you, an LTR will do nicely too. The guy who bought the M1A nearly got trampled at a gun show in Montreal when he went to sell the thing. Apparently, M1A's were extremely rare in PQ then.

I hunt coyotes for a living, and the best scope I could find was the Bushnell 6500. Clear as can be, amazing low light visibility, and tough as nails.
It has 'rain guard', 50mm bell, and a zoom ratio that no other manufacturer can touch. I am coming up on 4 years of hard use and the scope has been flawless.
It was hard to spend that amount of money on a product with the Bushnell name, but it was worth every penny.

I put a 4.5x14x50mm conquest zeiss on my varmint rig. In my opinion don't waste your money and time on a Bushnell when you are in the store compare them to some decent scopes and you will see first hand the difference. My opinion only.....

My ultimate coyote rifle will be Wheaterby S2 257 Wtby mag. EGW rail, Leupold rings, and my just recieved 8X32X50 Sightron Slll LRMOA... 87 gr @ just south of 3900 fps ought to do it... JP.

I just bought a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 3-9x40 this weekend, and I think it might do good for you as well. I'm about the farthest thing from a scope expert, but the internet says it's good for the money and I like it.
Came to a little bit under $500 if I'm remembering correctly. I'll have to double check the model number but I think P&D has them listed for $415.

I have the same gun with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44. I like the scope but if I were doing it again I probably would have gotten something a little smaller and without the mil-dot reticle. I like the idea of a 3.5-10,

Patrick

3-10 or 4-12 in the best brand you can afford, and leave it set on the low setting. Nothing worse then missing a hard earned coyote because you were struggling to get a good bead on him cause he snuck in to 40 yards and you had your scope set on 16x. I'll second the no mil dot movement I had a 6-18x target scope on my coyote rig, now it wears a 3-10 and it will probably get a 3-9 if I find a good deal on a gently used high end scope.
If they're far enough you need the higher magnification to see/hit them you probably have time to adjust your magnification.

When I bought my 6500 I went to a well stocked store and gave them my price range. Out came about 6 brands of scopes, a cloth lined table and an infinitate range. We sat outside and started to go over the scopes..
I had it in my head to buy a Leopold VX7, right out of the box the zoom ring was frozen.. Wouldn't budge. So they brought out a second one, it had a brown hue to it..
I went back later for low light comparison, the 6500 blew them all away. I could see significantly better through the scope then with a bare eye. The Leopold fell way short there too.
Then there was the zoom.. for a varmint gun I wanted a low zoom for close quarters, and when a high powered scope can get down to 2.5x, it was already screaming my name. I don't always hunt long open fields, so close shots were part of my quest.
Don't confuse the 6500 with the rest of their line, if it came with a different name the goobers who dismiss it because of the brand name would be drooling.. But they didn't. I hunt all day and night, there is no scope that can compete with it. I get paid when my bullet hits its mark, and I could not imagine better features on my optics.
Sometimes I think if Bushnell had a different name to stamp on that glass they would get past the mentality of purchasing the scope because of its name.
I laughed as hard as the next guy when he played that scope along the others in that price, but seeing is believing.

Yep, the zoom range on that 6500 cannot be beat for coyote hunting. 16X is decent for shooting paper at the range too. You can get them used on the EE for around $500. Very well built and bushnell stands behind their warranty on their Elite products.

I just put a 6-18 Leupold Vari X II with target turrets and fine duplex reticle on top of my #1V in 22.250. I am very impressed so far with what I experienced in sighting it in at the range. Once I get some hunting in on it I can give a better review but I always wanted a Leupold given their quality and outstanding warranty.

I picked up a bushnell tactical 6-24x50 for half price and it had been awesome for me. Six power has not been too high for any of my shots and even turned up all the way the glass is nice and clear. You should definitely go out and try some for yourself if you can, of course people are going to say you can't beat "x brand" because they probably have one and paid a lot of money for it. I always try to be objective when I purchase gear because you can miss out on a great deal on quality gear because you were caught up in all the bull####.
