Gov issued or personal AR for Cdn Mil.?

I thought I saw a pic of KevinB with a personal LMT upper though?

1. You'd have to ask Kev about it.

2. It may have been from when Kev was working as a Private Contractor...and;

3. Refer to 1.

As far as AKs...we confiscated them, but they got turned in.

I knew a US soldier who showed me a kimber 1911. He said it had been all over the world with him. He also told me that his bolt rifle was the one that goes with him to far off places. He showed me his gear he was preparing for Iraq, and everything except his M4 was in his house.
He could have been BSing me, I wouldnt have known. It all seemed very true at the time.

There are articles in the Law of Armed Combat that require combatants to use weapons that will not cause unnecessary injury. All issue equipment is tested against whatever standards (NATO or Canadian) and are lawyer approved not to cause pain and suffering.

For example, the snipers use hollow point ammunition (.30 cal 168gr Sierras), and hollow points expand on impact. I read some weasel words that justified this feature as a manufacturing artifact, that single aimed shots weren't uncontrolled fire and that the rifles firing them were much more refined to deliver killing shots vs a line grunt's service rifle. Cpl Snuffy's favourite handgun hasn't had that kind of legitimization, and he would be guilty of a war crime for using it in battle.

The 168gr SMK does not expand on impact.

Why would anyone want to use their own civie semi auto in a real fight?

I think a better question would be why (other than burst which could be changed) would anyone not want to use it? You have the option of knowing the gun's history and probably more opportunity to shoot it. The more you shoot it, the more comfortable/fast/natural you get with it.

only issue stuff...I have some friends in that non existent unit on the outskirts of ottawa and they are not allowed any personal stuff...on the bright side for them what they ask for...they get.

Back in the 1700's if your flintlock was a similar calibre and could take a bayonet, i would say yes. Officers up to WWI and possibly WWII were allowed to purchase their own sidearm as long as it was an approved calibre.

Some one did tell me that there exist a reference that allows you to lend your firearm to DND, in effect allowing you to use your personal weapon while on duty. The reference apparently stipulates that the CO of the unit must approve it, which is unlikely at the very best.

I'll see if I can dig up the reference.

Absolutely not.

My friend in the CF (in Afghanistan right now) is required to use his C8 (he was lucky to get it!). They are USUALLY allowed to use their own lights/VFG and even flip up sights etc....

Even Optics is a fight to use what you want... He was stuck with an EOTech that he hated, so instead he has a Leupold 1.5-5 on an ADM quick release mount, so he can pop it off before he gets back to base.

Nobody outside the wire cares if you use your own kit. The CF issue stuff is horrible (according to him)... Falling apart after 2 patrols, not holding enough or proper equipment, very uncomfortable when trying to shoot..... Thats why MANY guys use their own chest rigs and plate carriers, as long as they can use the CF issue armor.

But as to using your own weapon? big no on that one. Maybe with the more specialized guys like JTF2 or something, but as for infantry, you are stuck with what you get!

They won't even allow us to wear non issued desert scarf and this is in theater. So nope no personal weapons. Guys are always trying to put there own attachments on and they are constantly told that if it isn't issued it doesn't go on.
