well i finally figured out what to tell the wifey i want for xmas...
i told her a gps..
she say.s what the f@ck is that..
i tell her its a thingy to help me get unlost..(like i know tons on them):rolleyes:

she tells me to get lost till i can give her more info.....
so whats a good one?i dont want to break the old girls bank..i just want to give her an idea on a gift that would be of use to me for a change..
so opinions all on a not bad gps?
 
They vary from low $100 to over $500, other than budget, options are something to consider, if you just want to get "un-lost!!" go for a Garmin E-trex I bought mine this last summer for $120. Great unit, easy to use!!!

Gps

I've had an Etrex(Garmin) for 6-7 years when they first came out. They are certianly more affordable today then they were back then. If you're just looking for something to mark waypoints(geographic locations that you might want to return to then an Etrex base model will do this. If you're looking at mapping etc then a legend model will accomplish this. I use mine mainly for marking and mapping out deer scrapes, rubs, places I'd like to re-visit that I find in the woods. I have even used mine to find a couple of secretive fishing holes....good luck with your decision.
 
If you go one step up and get an E Trex Legend then you can Garmin software connect your GPS to your computer.

Really nice feature to have adn I believe teh Legend is the cheapest GPS to be capable of using the software.
 
is there a thingy were you can find out with in feet were a gps is..
let pretend i get lost(piss off to wants this to happen to me:D ) can my gps be located if needed to be?

X2 I upgraded from e-trex to Legend last spring. I love it.

No. The point of a GPS is to show you where YOU are, and which direction to go to get un-lost.:D

The less expensive e-trex style will not help you get unlost any more than a compass if you didn't have it turned on while you got lost. Unless you marked some waypoints previously for the area you got lost in. If you get a map-type version, at least you can see how lost you really are!;) :eek:

Go with garmin or magellan for gps units, dont go for any other brand.

The Garmin rhino series are quite nice. Try and get one with a colour screen, as they are a million times better --- trust me.
 
take thier advice and get any garmin. i cheaped out and bought a lowrance and there is no software anywhere for the darn thing. spend the extra 30 -80 and get a garmin.
in a nutshell with a handheld gps it has to have a clear sight with the sky . roof top and trees can get in the way. in a car you can buy a antenna but i find just putting it on the dash works pretty good. you have things called way points = a position on the earth recorded by long and lat. you have to have it on like he said for it to be usefull. basically you turn it on at trail head and mark that spot then leave it on and tell it to plot your course. when you get lost you tell it to go to the trail head and it walks you to the trail head. or like i do i mark the trail head where i start and then turn it off cuz im cheap and hate wasting battery and you never know if you may need the juice later. later if i wanna know where i am i turn it on and it shows me where i am in correlation to the trail head. i always carry a map and compass as back up, i can look at the map and see where i am on the map ( a good map has long and lat of the area ) plus if i get lost i can ask it to take me to the trail head but in this manner since i turned it off it will take me to the trail head like the crow flies in a straight line as since it was turned off it doesnt know what course i took.
that is basically a gps
there are some really techincal stuff you can get into, but i keep it simple

I've used a lot of different GPS's.

I'm currently using a Garmin Etrex Legend CX. I'm very happy with the little unit. Long battery life, uses Garmin Mapsource data, easy to use and cheap.

I bought mine at Deakin Equipment for $349 CAN and got $50US back on a Garmin rebate.

Slightly wrong, the GPS would locate your current position with the long/lat and thus draw a straight line to your first waypoint.

Actually YES, there is a GPS, and I think it might be Rhino, that has a feature where if a buddy has the same GPS, he can see you on his screen. So if your GPS is turned on, you could locate it with another GPS.

Amen to that, I have add the E Trex Venture and use it with my "Expert GPS" software. I'ts now 5 years old, hunting and work...it's done it all.
 
I recently picked up a Garmin GPSMAP76C. Awesome unit. You can upload maps to it, it does autorouting, very bright screen, and doesn't eat up the batteries. I highly recommend it.
