I just started a new job in the State's. I'd like to find one I can use for my truck.
Chicago and Milwalkie are the toughie's to navigate thru.
Who make's the most user friendly,truck useful GPS?
Can be available on either side of thr border.

I got a Garmin Legend for Christmas. This is about as basic as you can go and still have a mapping unit. In order to upload maps to the Legend you need to buy(or otherwise acquire) Garmin's Mapsource Topo Canada. This package includes Mapsource and all the National Topograohic Maps in Canada.

With Mapsource you can upload topo maps, but you can also upload/download waypoints, tracks and routes.

Just for the heck of it, this morning I uploaded the topog map for this area and went for a drive with the tracking turned on in the gps. The track followed the gps map extremely well.

When I got home I downloaded the track to Mapsource no sweat. I then hit 'View In Google Earth' and there was my track on Google Earth!! Sweet.

Also, there is a program called Oziexplorer. With it, you can scan a map and save it as a jpeg file. Then open the file in Oziexplorer and go through a calibration process so that the lats/longs are accurate on the map. You can then place waypoints etc on the map and upload them to the Legend. You can't upload the map though, you can only do that with Mapsource.

This is all new stuff to me and I'm having a lot of fun.

I'm waiting for the day that Google comes out with its own GPS (most likely an OEM jobber from Garmin) that allows you to interface with Google Earth and download all that map data, including satellite imagery. We know its coming, its just a matter of time.
