I use grease, mostly due to it staying in place and having a high resistance to water.
I've used oil and grease as a temporary weather protectant on metal, oil washes away very quickly however grease remains in place much longer. It was not a scientific test, but occasionally I have to store stuff outside that has machined areas that need to be protected from the elements. Once I tried using mobil 1 engine oil, rust started before the weeks end. The machined pieces that I greased only needed to have the grease wiped away before installation and they had been sitting outside for a couple weeks. I use mobil XHP 462 moly, which is a premium lithium complex grease. Grease "drys" out very quickly when exposed to fine dust and requires more attention in that kind of environment.
